Substantial research on problem drinking has identified determinants ranging from the biological to the socioculturel. In low fertility societies, less traditional orientations on questions of gender and family are linked to more non-marital births and a somewhat higher level of childbearing. This study looks at the attitudes to non-marital births to analyze the predictors of attitudes that are more favorable to childbearing. Using a sample from Oxford and Middlesex counties in Ontario, Canada, we find that women who are employed full-time have more favorable attitudes to nonmarital childbearing. For men, it is the non-married who have more positive attitudes. In contrast, women in complementary role relationships and men who are married are less favorable to having children outside of a marital relationship. Policies that would support family diversity and single parent families are discussed.
