It is common for parents/families in traditional settings, whether in Africa or China, to pair their children/members in marriage often without their consent. This specific mate selection practice, arrangement, is used to designate marriages in these settings: the so-called arranged marriages. Observations about this mate selection practice are then posited as conclusive evidence of change in these marriages. This paper attempts an exploratory clarification of marriages in traditional Africa in two ways. First, it uses the marriage system of the Okrikans to reveal that arranged and non-arranged marriages coexist, each administered by and organized around distinct institutions, with differing consequences for family membership, inheritance and other important issues. Second, it breaks do...

Judicial alteration of the meaning of civil marriage from union of a man and woman to the union of any two persons raises a number of legal issues not raised by legislative redefinition; these are separation-of-powers issues centered in notions of the proper scope and role of judicial review, creation of standards to guide judicial application of broad and open-ended constitutional guarantees like equality, liberty, and dignity, judicial deference to the political branches, and the like. Here, Stewart examines whether the tasks of the judiciary in these areas are done well by citing appellate cases.

Now, I have taken part in interfaith wedding services before, but one of the problems I have found with them in the past, is that they were not actually interfaith. In order to not offend anyone, they had become a blur of tradition, almost non-faith. Instead of honouring differences, they had chosen to somehow ignore it and pretend that it just wasn't there, when in truth, everyone who had a reason for being there knew it was. The image of a "melting pot" can be very frightening when it comes to distinct identity.
I was privileged in the service to be asked to offer the marriage meditation. This followed the couple coming under the bridal canopy of a tent-like structure, and entering the Huppah. As the representative of Jewish faith put it: "The doors to this Huppah are open on all sid...

Mid-way through the book, Hirsch offers methodological reflection on the changes described to this point, examining generational differences and possible impacts of social and economic change represented by migration to Atlanta, the underlying assumptions about what women and men bring to courtship, and what the evident changes from the past might mean in relation to the rise of companionate marriage, all with thoughtful comparisons drawn from a global literature. The final chapter reviews the principal themes addressed and conclusions she reaches, always associated with examination of revealing insights from other studies, and with self-revelation of shortcomings of an approach so focused on gender and sexuality.

Few efforts have been made to explore two emerging demographic features, the extra low fertility of the Taiwanese population, and a rapid increase in cross-border marriages. The objective of this research is to provide comparative estimates of fertility outcomes of marriage immigrants from Mainland China, Southeast Asia, and other countries. Through exploring the 2003 Survey of Foreign and Mainland Chinese Spouses' Living Conditions, this study gives us a first glimpse of how prevalent cross-border marriages are in Taiwanese society. While the headlines tend to portray an image that only old veterans and minority rural men are likely to marry an immigrant, the findings indeed show that an increased number of Taiwanese men have adopted cross-border marriage as an alternative. The fertili...
