It turns out this cookbook was first published in 1959, and has been handed out in schools ever since, having been reprinted 23 times. It was originally called Recipes for Young Homemakers, then later Recipes for Young Adults. Several of you wrote that you have the original 1959 edition (thank you for sending the photocopies and scans of the cover and recipe), and many of us have saved whatever edition we received in school. (I still have my copy, too, with "Darlene Smendziuk, Grade 7, Winnipegosis" proudly written in the front cover.) Many readers wrote that there is still a recipe or two they regularly use from the book, some noted that they use theirs all the time, and some mentioned that they like to keep it around at home or at the lake because it covers the basics. Others wrote th...

Taste Tester Notes: This makes a delicious and satisfying soup. Once cooked, you can serve as is, if you like, for a more rustic soup, or puree until velvety smooth for a more elegant presentation. When cooking the leeks and onions, by keeping the pan covered and on low heat they will not brown (and you don't want them to), but will become soft. (If you haven't used leeks before, you will be cutting off the dark green stalk and using the mainly white and very pale green portion. Rinse well before using, as sand can be trapped in the layers.) Once the soup was cooked, I removed the bay leaf and used a hand-held blender right in the pan for a few seconds to puree until smooth. Taste the soup, and depending on the flavour of the stock you used, you may want to adjust seasoning. Instead of ...

When was the last time you bought pickles from a tub? Ever? Well, now you can, and they are big, crunchy and delicious, with the half-sour flavour of cukes that haven't been brined very long. You'll find them at the Russian Deli, a seemingly tiny place next to what once was Harman's drugstore. But there's more here than meets the eye from out front since it stretches into a sizable L-shaped area in the rear.
You can still have a Kosher corned beef on rye ($5.75), but Desserts Plus (for take-out only these days) has recently expanded its repertoire of microwave-ready meals to include such Yiddish comfort staples as garlicky beef brisket with buckwheat kasha and a few spears of asparagus, or a light and flavourful meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a blah mixture of frozen veggies ($12.95 ...

New England, site of the diner's humble beginnings, still offers many opportunities to sample the real deal. The Modern Diner (364 East Ave., Pawtucket, R.I., 401-726-8390) was the first diner to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A vintage vision in mustard and maroon tones, this Sterling Streamliner, manufactured in the 1930s, is sloped at one end to resemble the bullet shape of a locomotive engine. The menu is both classic and creative, from meatloaf to pumpkin-walnut pancakes.
The wheels on the recently reopened Miss Port Henry Diner (5 St. Patrick's Place, Port Henry, N.Y., 518-546-3400) offer a clue to its roots as a travelling lunch wagon. The white-clad structure, with its the wooden stools, marble counters and icebox, looks like it just rolled in from a time...

GOOD news! Lucky moneybags Jupiter is in a water sign this year, bringing you blessings and good fortune because you're a fellow water sign. (It's a vibration thang.) This influence brings travel opportunities and a chance to explore further education. (Great year to go to get training or higher education.) The last time this lovely influence happened was 1998. However, you might be tempted to go overboard this year (not usually your style). Basically, whatever you do, the trick will be to know when to stop. Because you're the most tenacious sign in the zodiac, letting go isn't easy for you, although you did let go of things around 2001-04. Shee! That was inevitable. Fortunately, from August 2001 to August 2002, Jupiter was in your own sign, which was a nice cushion. (And I don't mean w...

I am quite excited," said [Scatliff]. "Canada hasn't participated that much in the Youth Games in the past. I think only twice, so for our youth, this is another multi-sport experience. It is also a perfect lead up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, and the 2012 Olympics in London for many of them.
"I am there to make sure that the athletes have all they need in order to compete, or have the equipment they need," she said. "Also the kinds of food they require. At the last Commonwealth Games (Melbourne), food was not a problem. They had all the different foods: pizza, meatloaf and potatoes (as well as other ethnic cuisine)."
"I am incredibly pleased that Shawnee has agreed to lead Canada's delegation to Pune," said [Scott Stevenson]. "She clearly understands the value of providin...

Well, now, you call in Robert Altman, one of America's great filmmakers, and a master at leisurely ensemble work. The result is "radio like you've never seen it before.
The laconic humour of [Garrison Keillor]'s between-song patter and made-up ads -- "Why pay for fancy food when what you really like is meatloaf?" -- reminds us that when we think of prairie culture we shouldn't confine ourselves to the Canadian provinces. We should remember our good neighbours to the immediate south, the Dakotans and the Minnesotans.
Keillor's characteristic persona distrusts showiness and cultivates cold-weather stoicism. ("We are not beach people," he says. "We are not sunshiney people.") He believes most problems can be solved with "fundamental politeness and goodwill," and maybe a roll of duct tape.

Tackle chap-stick on fabrics by dabbing waterless hand cleaner onto the area. Rub gently and wash as usual. Hang to dry. For chap-stick stains that have gone through the washer and dryer; soak the clothes in hot water and Oxy Clean or soak each garment separately in half-cup Arm and Hammer washing soda and enough hot water to cover the clothes for 30 minutes. Wash as usual. Air dry. Repeat until stains are gone. Submitted by Dawne O.
About twenty years ago we had a serious infestation of silverfish. I don't remember where I learned this solution, but it worked. A mixture of powdered sugar and boric acid spread in a few places along the baseboards did the trick (take caution around children and pets). No fumigation necessary. I haven't seen a single silverfish since. Submitted by F...

A lot of people think I'm just biting off more than I can chew, and I know they're probably right," conceded [SAM Katz], who laced up for a noon-hour run yesterday down Waterfront Drive.
"I'm hoping to do it in six hours," he said. "After that you'll find me lying on the street somewhere.
"If I start slowing down, just play Meatloaf's "Bat out of Hell" and I'll pick up the pace," he laughed.
