  • Noise exposure has been the focus of research attention for nearly 40 years, since the classic work by Glass and Singer (1972). Several studies have documented adverse effects of chronic noise exposure on children, including disrupted reading acquisition (Bronzaft & McCarthy, 1975; Evans & Maxwell, 1997), memory impairment (Hygge, Evans, & Bullinger, 2002), and physiological stress responses (Evans, Hygge, & Bullinger, 1995). Fortunately, these effects appear to be reversible: The introduction of noise attenuation strategies resolved reading problems in elementary school children (Bronzaft, 1981), and the end of chronic noise exposure (because of the closing of a nearby airport) reversed the adverse effects on memory (Hygge et al., 2002). There is mounting evidence that ...

  • It has been demonstrated that attachment anxiety, as compared with attachment avoidance, is a better predictor of the distress associated with childhood maltreatment (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2007; Muller, Kraftcheck, & McLewin, 2004; Muller & Lemieux, 2000; Muller, Sicoli, & Lemiux, 2000) and bereavement (Fraley & Bonanno, 2004). Muller et al. (2004) noted that a negative view of self (i.e., attachment anxiety) may be a more important predictor of distress because of its association with an increased propensity toward self-blame (Janoff-Bulman, 1992; Muller et al., 2000), dysfunctional beliefs (Roberts, Gotlib, & Kassel, 1996), and ineffective coping skills (Cassidy & Mohr, 2001; Crittenden, 1997). With respect to bereavement, individuals high in attachment anxi...

  • Marketing research is increasingly interested in people's perception- and affect-laden, identity-involving relationships to companies and their brands. However, little attention has been paid to (1) how, specifically, such identity relationships to companies will stem from identity relationships to various other things that are relevant to people and associated with companies. Besides, (2) the influences of such relationships to companies on various business-relevant behaviors of the individuals, let alone organizations which the individuals may represent, have not been examined in a comprehensive way. This article addresses the identified research gaps by presenting an integrative framework that introduces a special kind of identity relationship, termed affective self-affinity (ASA). ...

  • This paper presents the results of a research project developed to analyze and diagnose family co-responsibility in Spain. The basic goal of the research was to broaden our knowledge about how families negotiate the division of household labour and also to understand how the processes involved in such negotiation hinder or facilitate changes in gender roles. In this paper, we report our analysis and conclusions in relation to the implicit model implemented by parents in the socialization of shared family responsibility. The data used for the analysis were taken from a set of semistructured interviews carried out in a focus group context with Spanish parents. The analysis shows how the traditional, idealized model of co-responsibility has been substituted by a more individualistic one. H...
