If you've been brought up to have no dessert until you've finished your meal, Mercato also serves huge and tasty Italian-style grilled sandwiches on delicious, dense ciabatta bread, partnered by a little container of pickled Italian veggies ($6.75 to $7.75, taxes included).
Van Loi used to sell its Asian foods in a crammed-to-the-rafters little store at the foot of McPhillips. Now it has moved further north on McPhillips, into larger premises, and still seems to be crammed to the rafters with an even wider assortment of Asian foods. I actually found artichokes at $1 each -- not exactly Asian but less than half the price of some I've seen elsewhere. I also got carried away and bought fresh turmeric root, which I now don't know what to do with. Any suggestions?

She's one of this year's winners in the residential category of Take Pride Winnipeg's annual Flower Power contest.
[LAURIE Goetz] started her garden 10 years ago when her family moved into the house. "I have four teenage boys so its sort of a sanity for me," said Goetz of her garden. "When things get tense in the house, I go out there to relax.
The idea is to increase curb appeal in Winnipeg," said Tom Ethans, executive director of Take Pride Winnipeg, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring community pride.

Sorry, milady, but I've got to get my spaghetti al pomodoro," said the beach hawker, impeccable in his white linen shirt, khaki shorts and moccasins. And he headed to the nearest beachfront restaurant for his noon meal, which would likely cost more than the exquisitely embroidered linens he peddles on the sandy beach of Forte dei Marmi.
Aug. 28, the feast of Forte's patron saint, Sant'Ermete, is the one night when the beach is open, so the bathing establishments can hold viewing parties for the fireworks off the pontile, a long wharf from where fishermen cast round nets.
Perhaps I'll travel across continents before returning, and perhaps there'll come a time when I'll be uncomfortably perched on some hot corner of seaside paradise and a friend will ask me with a triumphant smile, "Isn'...

It's an intimate little place, with a raftered ceiling and walls of exposed cinder block and brick. Along one wall there's a display case of snacks, pastries and gelati (from Leo's); along the other, a bar with stools and, in the rear, an Enomatic wine-dispensing system that should be fascinating for oenophiles. At the front, overlooking Corydon (and two massive pots of rosemary on the sill), there are four round tables, two of them low and surrounded by deep easy chairs, two of them high, with seating on bar stools. In fine weather there's more seating on the patio in front.
Of course, there are panini ($6 to $8); ours was the delicious Fantasia, grilled on good chewy bread, generously stuffed with a fine mixture of prosciutto (and plenty of it), bocconcini and tomato and heady with th...

OK, so you'd probably eat chocolate no matter what -- but it turns out there are a few good reasons to enjoy the stuff. I tracked down Dr. Arnie Hydamaka in Nanjing, China, where he's teaching for six weeks. He's a professor at University of Manitoba in the department of food science who studies chocolate, and he found the time to share some information about chocolate's benefits via e-mail.
This is a recipe we've used for a couple of decades now. It's a really nice chocolate cheesecake -- it's got a nice, rich, chocolatey taste, almost like a Fudgesicle," says [Darren MacCormack], "We've always sold it for $3.99, so we'll be including what we call a 'short coffee or tea' for the five dollars.
