[Wilson] began his football career at Kelvin High School, moved on to the Winnipeg Rugby Football Club team, then to the St. John Roamers that won the Western Canadian Championship. From there, he went into the senior league of the Winnipeg Rugby Football Club, which became the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1938, and won the Grey Cup in 1939. Wilson played centre and linebacker with the Bombers until 1942, when he joined the merchant marine in the Second World War.
