There's also 100 years worth of garbage room at Brady, meaning there's plenty of time to emit more methane. One hitch is a curbside organic collection program that's always on city hall's to-do list. If organics are composted instead of dumped in the landfill, there's probably only a 20-year supply of methane in the dump, which is still worth capturing.
It's simple. You sink a bunch of sewer pipes into the landfill and use a glorified vacuum to suck out all the methane gas produced by the rotting garbage. You can then flare off the gas, which turns the methane into carbon dioxide. That's still bad for the environment, but not nearly as bad as doing nothing. The better route is to think of methane as a commodity like natural gas or coal that can be turned into electricity or heat. The ga...

Brady Road Landfill emitted about 287,000 carbon-dioxide equivalent tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2007, according to Environment Canada's most recent data. The city says it can capture at least 97,000 tonnes of GHGs via methane capture, which may bump the landfill off Environment Canada's list of big polluters.
