By Don Martin From the 346-metre-high observation deck of the CN Tower, which replicates the only view of this city helicoptering G20 leaders saw when they landed in downtown Toronto, the summit host has the look of a metropolis hit by a killer plague. Speaking of police, they already gather in jaw-dropping numbers as omnipresent clusters at every intersection or wander aimlessly as enforcement groups around buildings and down streets, wearing bulletproof vests with helmets dangling from their belts and earpieces connected to voices of undetermined origin.
Frontwoman Emily Haines usually earns most of the attention, but it's guitarist James Shaw who drives the band's spiky-pop- meets-new-wave sound. Haines is her typically beautiful self and strikes an imposing figure whether she's just moving her legs side to side or bashing away at her keyboard/synth.
This reflexive paper is based on research that was carried out between November 2006 and January 2007 among people of Indian origin now living in Durban-a metropolis situated on the east coast of South Africa. Its intention is to compare the evidence that was gathered during this period with research that was done during the decades of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s on attitudes towards family and household living arrangements among Indians in this city.
