  • This paper examines how adolescents' values may be shaped by the immediate social context with special reference to social class and rural urban background. The locus of study is Taiwan, a society with drastically declining birth rates in recent years. It is hypothesized that the value adolescents place on having children (or the positive value) and not having children (or the negative value) are accounted for by individual, familial and social contextual factors. Data are taken from an island-wide sample of first-year senior high students. A field survey was administered from winter of 2005 to spring of 2006. The analysis shows that three dimensions can be extracted from both positive and negative values toward having children: with emotional value rated the most important, followed by...

  • People love to mock the middle class. Its narrow-mindedness, complacency and conformism are the mother lode of material for sitcom writers and novelists. But Marx thought "the bourgeoisie has played a most revolutionary part" in history. On this Marx was right. For years, policy-makers have tied economic success to the rich ("trickle-down economics") and to the poor ("inclusive growth"). But it is the middle class that is the real motor of economic growth. History suggests middle-class people can behave in radically different ways. The rising middle class of 19th-century Britain agitated peacefully for the vote; in Latin America in the 1990s the same sorts of people backed democracy. Yet the middle class also supported fascist governments in Europe in the 1930s and initially backed mili...

  • In this study, we explore the gap between the culture and conduct of paternal involvement with children among Korean middle-class and working-class fathers. Using interview data from thirty-two fathers following a period of national economic crisis, we find that Korean fathers negotiated among three contradictory and often ambiguous sets of cultural expectations: traditional Confucian fatherhood; work success as measure of good fatherhood; and "new" fatherhood that embraces providing and caregiving roles. Family involvement was limited for all fathers, although care for children was most directly shaped by strict or flexible working schedules. Middle class and working class fathers used different strategies to reduce the gap between conflicting cultural expectations for paternal caregiv...
