AN aboriginal scholarship foundation dedicated to the memory of [Helen Betty Osborne] Betty Osborne kicked off its annual awards presentation yesterday evening by launching a graphic novel about her life before her murder.
The Osborne case, and later, the shooting death of J. J. Harper, triggered an exhaustive probe into racism in the province's justice system through the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry.
The book on Osborne showcases the woman, not the crime, as a way to inspire aboriginal students and commemorate Osborne's humanity.

Meanwhile Thursday, a small army of mothers gathered at the Manitoba legislature to help Driedger lobby for better midwifery services, specifically a full-fledged education program to train more midwives. A new aboriginal midwifery training program is run out of the University College of the North, but there's nothing in Winnipeg to propel qualified midwives into the workforce, even though a program plan for the University of Manitoba was long ago developed.

Hussain Gusti obviously did his homework when looking at aboriginal health and equity as practiced by Burntwood Regional Health Authority. However, what he doesn't explain is that Burntwood is the northern agent for Manitoba Health, which remains embroiled with the federal government on issues of aboriginal health services. Two health systems operate in Manitoba with all the cracks, crevices, inefficiencies and costs inherent to this approach.
So it's no surprise that with two health care systems operating in Manitoba, the one that steers away from First Nations has difficulty being meaningfully responsive to aboriginal peoples. And more broadly, this lack of responsiveness on fundamental aboriginal matters, this endless tactical arguing on an issue-by-issue basis, creates a political e...

There's a real crunch," said Tory deputy health critic Myrna Driedger. "They are really dragging their heels on addressing the challenges women are facing.
To get the jump on its promise to hire 700 nurses over the next four years, the Doer government added 40 more nursing seats at Manitoba colleges and universities Thursday. Red River College and the University of Manitoba will get funding for 16 seats each, with the rest going to train French-speaking nurses at the College universitaire de Saint-Boniface. Plus, the province has earmarked $500,000 to woo nurses back to

Une as...

Thankfully, one local high school, Kildonan East Collegiate, through its biomedical internship program, has taken the initiative to combat this problem. The internship program, already 10 years old, is designed to assist Grade 12 students to explore, first hand, the potential of occupations in health care, pharmaceutical manufacturing, microbiology, biotechnology and food sciences.
Far from being a hand-holding program, the Biomedical Internship Program develops self-confidence and personal independence. For instance, once prepared through the CareerBridge program, these students are required to search out and arrange their own internship program. This means researching potential occupations, making contact with potential employer partners, engaging in informational interviews and nego...
