  • In general, the allocation of human capital, like individual education, skills and performance, being the strongest predictors for the direction and pace of integration of immigrants in the past, may become less important, while the social capital of already existing 'strong ties' in the receiving context, of transnational family and kinship systems, may become increasingly important, possibly being the predominant predictors for the relative success of immigrant groups in the future. Whereas children satisfy parent's needs for economic well-being and social esteem, especially in less affluent societies with few alternatives of security against the risks of life, children remain an important source of affective solidarity and lifelong bonding in welfare societies and a target of intens...

  • This paper argues that states have undergone a shift in how they see and respond to human smuggling. They are now less bound by those land borders that once demarcated the edges of sovereign territory and act more transnationally in response to the transnational practices of human smugglers. The interception of four cargo boats carrying migrants smuggled from Fujian, China, serves as a case study. After explaining the methodology, I locate Canada in the global industries of human smuggling and border enforcement, outline changes to border enforcement that have taken place in the time since these interceptio...

  • What is less developed in Transnational Ruptures is a theoretical understanding of the intersections that constitute the gendered aspects of migration. [Catherine Nolin] indicates that migration is gendered because women often follow the men (although this is not altogether true even in her data), they get different types of jobs, and men and women tell different types of narratives. Missing is an explicit linkage between the narratives and other relevant socio-political dynamics including class, race, and the politics of belonging in Canada. For instance, one of the interviewees describes that she feels "not specifically a Canadian, but one feels more part of Canada" when engaged in daily routines, including cleaning hotel rooms. Nolin interprets this as: "ALBA LUZ's [pseudonym] mind i...
