  • You know, [Jay Leno] is a driven American guy. He's working class; he's from Andover, Mass., which is close to where I grew up. He's a Boston comic, which is what I am. And he's like, 'This is my show. I'm (expletive) holding onto that show.' He's not kidding around (and) I don't blame him. He's holding on, and he won. I mean, it's pretty impressive, what he pulled off. "Conan will be fine. He was born in Brookline, Mass.; he's from, like two blocks from the Kennedys' compound," said [Louis CK]. "He's a rich, well-heeled, Harvard-educated, milk-and-honey-fed fella. He'll be OK, and he'd be the first one to tell you that. "I love the guy. And I think he'll end up somewhere else, and he'll go back to doing Conan. It's hurting him inside because he wants to be the host of The Tonight Sho...

  • I want to thank Johanna Steinfeld for her article (Former Calgarian thrilled and surprised by 'gem' Winnipeg, Aug. 21). If the only minuses she can come up with about living in Winnipeg are lack of air conditioning and insurance and the need to renew driver's licences annually I'd say we are doing pretty good! I have had to put up with many years of my sister dissing Winnipeg even though she was born and raised here and now resides in Calgary. Thank you Johanna for telling it like it is, that Calgary isn't the Land of Milk and Honey like everyone thinks and that Winnipeg has so much more to offer than people realize. Much to my sister's chagrin, we chose to move back to Winnipeg instead of Calgary after five years of residing in Quebec because of all the reasons Johanna talks about in ...

  • Kodalonis heeded [Gus Danakas]'s advice and purchased the takeout half in 1996. The Bond entity, which had remained in the hands of owner No. 2, ceased operations six months later. Kodalonis unveiled his present-day, 4,000-square-foot restaurant/lounge -- complete with a wall-sized mural depicting the neighbourhood skyline -- in 1999. (Kodalonis' journey to the land of milk and honey and flamingos actually began in 1985, when he travelled from Greece to Winnipeg to visit his sister. During "the best holiday of my life," [Kodalonis] met his wife-to-be.) Dal's is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday. But the hours on the door aren't carved in stone. The owner has personally delivered pizzas to shift workers at nearby CN, for example, as early as 9 a.m. and as late as 3 a.m. "When MPI...

  • The core of being Jewish," explains Rabbi Henry Balser, "is the receiving of the Torah. "To be a Jew is to be one who was at Sinai," Balser says, "and the way we do this today, the way we stand at Sinai today, is by studying Torah." In addition to all night study, it is customary on Shavuot to eat only dairy foods. This custom is generally considered to have derived from either the Torah's description of the promised land as one flowing with milk and honey, or from King Solomon's Song of Songs description of the Torah as "honey and milk under your tongue."

  • Purposes of this article include providing a brief assessment of current religion-marriage research, a concise review of the historical roots of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, a look at marital law as explained in the Old Testament, New Testament, and Qur' an, and an overview of ancient and contemporary marital ritual, religious practice, and symbolism within each of these three religious traditions informed through the lens of attachment theory. [...] in Marks (2005) study of the influence of religion on marriage across Abrahamic faiths, spiritual beliefs were positively linked to promarriage and anti-divorce sentiments, a shared worldview system, and a belief that God was a tangible support to the success of couples' marital relationships.
