This article focuses on rural girls' aspirations of becoming migrants in a setting where girls are subjected to social constraints curtailing their movements in the midst of an otherwise mobile society, where mothers and grandmothers frequently recall their experiences in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and boys set off on their first migration in their mid- or late teens. However, the high level of mobility affects both intergenerational relations and the ways in which girls can justify their wish to migrate. Based on multi-sited ethnographic research between 2002 and 2008 in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, the article explores the ways in which images of success and material wealth of (trans)national migrants feed into adolescent girls' imaginations of migration and its outcome. Furthermore,...

Interactions such as these may be quite stressful for the parent, contributing to small behavioral changes that add up to a decline in the quality of parenting (Ambert 2001).\n Thus, it is unlikely that regional and income differences between the samples account for the ethnic differences that we found regarding the association between childhood obesity and parental behavior. Given the high levels of attention accorded to obesity and widely publicized statements about an "obesity epidemic," it is possible that the gap between African American and European American parents has narrowed over time because recent public discussion has increased the salience of the issue among African American parents.

Changes in farm work on Norwegian family farms have, since the 1950s, undergone a masculinisation process. Research has described how farming has become a business controlled by and executed by men, a process that has created 'the farmer' as a masculine label of occupation. This paper analyses data from surveys of farming couples in 1995 and 2002. The main objective in the paper is to test whether changes in men and women's farm work can be described as a transition towards a one-person farm structure in Norway. The main hypothesis put forward is that men and women tend to specialise in either on-farm or off-farm work, and that their allocation of work time depends upon their educational training in agriculture, their interests in farm work, and the capacity of the farm to provide work ...
