When an economy is at its long-term potential output level, it is the growth rate of money supply that determines the inflation rate -- a simple dictum that inflation is ultimately a monetary phenomenon. The growth rate of money supply moved with inflation measures in a downward trend from 1991 to approximately 1997. Since 1998, however, the growth rate of money supply has surged substantially upwards while the inflation rate has remained stable. From 1991 to 1997, average monthly inflation was 2.1 per cent while the monthly growth rate of money averaged 3.3 per cent. From 1998 to 2006, inflation averaged again at about 2.1 per cent but the money supply had an average monthly growth rate of approximately five per cent.

This paper presents a case study of the co-operative design, development, and implementation of an XBRL-enabled interorganizational system (IOS) by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, the Reserve Bank of Australia (central bank), and the Australian Bureau of Statistics to revolutionize reporting by financial institutions in Australia. The findings illustrate that the complexity of data consumption patterns drove increased interdependence within the financial information supply chain requiring the co-operative development of context sensitive data exchanges and commodity-like IT infrastructures. The paper concludes that the co-operative model to IOS development exhibited here is likely to be more suited to the development of systems for financial information supply chains tha...

China has experienced pressing energy shortages in recent years, and Beijing has intensified its efforts to secure China's energy supply through both increased domestic production and external expansion. In this paper, I first analyze China's global quest for energy by looking at the correlation between China's economic growth and its energy security concerns. I then examine the implications of China's "go-out" strategy through two sets of case studies. I argue that China's global search for energy is primarily driven by its rapid economic growth, out of insecurity rather than a master plan to dominate the world, and that China's energy security issues have multiple implications beyond simple economic concerns. Finally, I recommend a forward-looking engagement policy to be adapted by Ca...

[Milton Friedman]'s passion for freedom and liberty has influenced more lives than he ever could possibly know," said Gordon St. Angelo, the foundation's president and CEO, said in a statement. "His writings and ideas have transformed the minds of U.S. presidents, world leaders, entrepreneurs and freshmen economic majors alike.
"I hope what I wrote contributed to that, but it was not the moving force," Friedman told the New York Sun in March 2006. "People like myself, what we did was keep these ideas open until the time came when they could be accepted."
"You must be as chagrined as I am to have [Richard Nixon] for your disciple," Friedman wrote. [John Kenneth Galbraith] didn't reply, Friedman said.
