'WHY ?" My friends ask. Well, like many choices in my life, this one was based on little knowledge and a gut feeling. I wanted to see "Africa," so I went to the source of great travelling knowledge -- a Lonely Planet guidebook. It suggested one African itinerary, Cape Town to Morocco, in nine to 12 months. Yikes! I had 30 days. Obviously, Africa was to be taken in manageable chunks, or not at all. I was not to be deterred -- every journey begins with the first step -- or as in the ancient East Indian proverb: "One can only eat an elephant, if you start by taking the first bite.
There's a leopard right there in the trees, with a cub." Sure enough, the leopard kitten strolled right up, while mom preened herself in the shade, so close her torso gently revealed each breath. The cur...

The trip is being billed as a "book lovers' cruise," and as Free Press Books editor, I'm hoping we'll attract a group of vacationers who, like us, enjoy reading, and talking about what they read, as much as they do sightseeing and dining.
All this is totally optional. There are no obligations to read a word if you don't want to. It's not homework. We'll be on vacation here, after all.
On the return trip, we'll be throwing anchor in Casablanca in Morocco, and on mainland Spain we'll be docking in the cities of Malaga and Seville, both in the country's languid southern coastal province of Andalusia.

In 2005, [Tom Avery], four like-mined companions and 16 Eskimo sled dogs tramped 665 km across the Arctic Ocean in a re-creation of American Robert Peary's 1909 trek to the North Pole.
Why bother with the North Pole. Don't people go there all the time? Not by land they don't. Eighty per cent of expeditions to the Pole fail, and no one had ever replicated Peary's feat.
Avery and his team planned to mimic Peary with their own complex logistical plan. Their extra supplies would be transported by plane to the same latitudes Peary's were. Poor ice or weather conditions could doom their expedition.
