Cabo, or Los Cabos as it is frequently called, is one of the smaller cities in Mexico that still has a very good tourism infrastructure. On the southernmost tip of the Baja peninsula, it is in the Mountain time zone. It offers an excellent climate, especially for those who don't seek locations with non-stop extreme heat. With an average temperature around 78 degrees during the daytime and night temperatures that can go down to the 60s, it is comfortable enough for active or quiet pursuits any time. Emerging from a small fishing village that was once a favoured hangout for pirates in days gone by, today it offers excellent sport fishing, or casting for wayward golf balls on one of its many championship golf courses designed by names like Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones II and Pete D...

It was as if they figured, 'We've got this line. Let's run it all the way to the Pacific,' " [James Ritchie] said.
"Even the Dakota language gives hints to the sacred nature of the place," said [Frank Brown]. "It was called Mani Toba. You know what Manitoba means? Mani means walk. Toba, four, the four directions. Turtle Mountain was the centre of it.
"He walk in front and he called Sitting Bull out. First time, he didn't come out. Second time, Bullhead called and Sitting Bull came out. Sitting Bull said, "I'm finished with war, with everything. I want to live in peace."

[Sankar Chatterjee] presented his latest findings on Shiva to the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Portland, Ore., on Oct. 18. He makes a compelling case, identifying an underwater mountain called Bombay High, off the coast of Mumbai, that formed right at the time of the dinosaur extinction. This mountain measures three miles from sea bed to peak, and is surrounded by Shiva's crater rim. Chatterjee's analysis shows that it formed from a sudden upwelling of magma that destroyed the Earth's crust in the area and pushed the mountain upward in a hurry. He argues that no force other than the rebound from an impact could have produced this kind of vertical uplift so quickly. And the blow that caused it would surely have been powerful enough to smash ecosystems around the...

Squat in stature and gruff, with a serious dark-eyed glare, he's dedicated his life to protecting the Congo's mountain gorillas. He's plainly hesitant about lending his valuable time to a stranger, but shakes his head and mutters about the June day three years ago when rebel fighters invaded this park and burned the wildlife station standing behind him to the ground.
The first worry was this: would the animals be there? The park was created for the gorillas, but they are here," said Nishuli. "The problem is that some became savage, they still do not like people up to now.
[Beghene] says: "We had tranquillity after war, we made an inventory and there were less animals... but now if the war stops and there's peace, the gorillas will be increasing."

Coming here after that is just what the kids needed," [Ken Bekele] said. "On a day like today, it's really important.
"There's been a significant lineup at the door," said Kevin Jessiman, manager of Fun Mountain, a waterslide park located just east of the city.
"They're coming and having a good time," said a clerk at Thunder Mountain waterslide in Grand Beach.

The Lakers, whose Warroad home is just 6.5 kilometres from the Canadian border on the shore of Lake of the Woods, was a Hockey Manitoba member for more than 30 years and won the Allan Cup national Canadian senior men's hockey title three straight years (1993-94, '94-'95, '95-'96).
My grandpa, the biggest joy in his life, he always said hockey, but it was also his family," said [Gigi Marvin], who recently completed her second year at the University of Minnesota. "He was there for my mite games, me and my cousins' peewee, bantam, high school games. He was a great supporter of hockey everywhere and I'm so proud to be his granddaughter.
* "I told the team we have to take one day at a time and it's no different than climbing a mountain. You just look at the opponent you're up against that ...

Manitoba ombudsman Irene Hamilton said the RM of Turtle Mountain and the provincial government have taken the steps she advised to prevent such a situation from ever happening again, but Hamilton still believes the process the RM went through to raise funds to build the new rec centre "does not meet an acceptable standard of transparency and accountability.
The rec centre is to include a community hall, skating rink, curling rink, fitness area, walking/running track and bowling lanes. The project was originally approved in 2005 for $6.5 million. At the time, the town of Killarney and the RM of Turtle Mountain separately approved bylaws to borrow $3.5 million to cover the cost of building the rec centre.
Mayor Brian Moore resigned on April 11 after his attempt to let residents speak was...

Even the lonely Liberals are not immune. Although neither of the two Liberal MLAs has a legacy to defend in Manitoba (it's been a while since they were in power), that doesn't stop the NDP from dredging up a few niggling historical details. Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard once toiled as a cabinet minister in prime minister Jean Chrétien's federal government. Every time Gerrard rises in the legislature, he is buried under a mountain of Chrétien's shortcomings.
Theoretically, however, there could be a limit to how long that kind of strategy could work. This fall, the NDP government will enter its ninth year in power, a tenure that could serve as a tipping point. With its recently minted majority, Premier Gary Doer and his government should be good until 2011, at the least. Over the next four y...
