  • THE latest work by Winnipeg filmmaker Noam Gonick, done in collaboration with Toronto-based artist Luis Jacob, takes a surprising direction for those familiar with Gonick's past creations. Titled Wildflowers of Manitoba, it's a grand, ambitious, multimedia spectacle of visual art, involving film projectors, music, a large geodesic dome, and even an actor, one day a week, lying on a bed. While Gonick says he'd like to think of himself in broader terms, [Cliff Eyland] is right, to some degree. One of Gonick's latest projects, for example, involved working on a piece with noted Canadian artist Rebecca Belmore -- a film installation that screened at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2005. Winnipeg audiences, of course, will be more familiar with Gonick's work than that of his latest colla...

  • Reinterpreted by sculptor David Hannan and multimedia artist Chris Larsen, fragments taken from nature have been transformed into two art collections opening at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba tomorrow. Expressed in a poetic manner, the theme has been approached in three very distinctive ways: an installation of hollow amber resin sculpture trees, paintings of trees that have human-like appearances and photos of parts of trees.

  • The other standout of the evening was Wa Wa Tey Wak (Northern Lights), an oratorio based on an aboriginal theme by Manitoba composer Andrew Balfour. He directed his own choral group, Camerata Nova, in this work that also featured the soulful viola of Elise Lavallée, Micheal Thompson on didgeridoo and throat singing by Madeleine Allakarallak and daughter Natasha. Distinguished guest composer Christos Hatzis' Ah Kalleli, from his multimedia work Constantinople, was, for some reason, sung in two instalments. Egyptian-Canadian singer Maryem Toller lent her unique talent to this piece, which is based on a Sufi song, and was accompanied by a pre-recorded, computer-manipulated version of her own voice. This "sonic environment" had an esoteric echoing effect that was quite arresting. The very ...

  • Multimedia is the utilization of various digital media elements delivered on a single platform to provide interactive education, information and training. Multimedia requires balance between form and content. Knowledge in interface design standards, usability, sourcing and hyperlinking leads to understanding multiple media form. Content acquisition requires expertise on technical fundamentals. Multiple media content may be made or bought. The choice is made by assessing the range of distribution of the title, the budget and the sophistication of the audience and playback hardware.

  • So [James Bezan] might be onto something if he can remember the camera company is called "Kodak" not "Kodiak", convince Woody to stop trying to head-butt him out of the shot, and get some editing assistance from Mars Hill so he is no longer heard in the videos telling people when to start speaking. Winnipeg NDP MP Jim Maloway, who attended the event, said he was surprised the resolution passed. Maloway worked on the resolution but couldn't introduce it himself because he's not from the U.S. But two North Dakota state legislators agreed and the resolution went through by a vote of 41 to 28. You have money through this stimulus package to bring in [Bill Clinton]," she said. "Why don't you have money for the vaccine.

  • Anybody walking outside the Vancouver Art Gallery will easily notice the exhibition, as it will be projected onto a screen measuring 20 feet by 15 feet. "That's what I'm most excited about - that it's going to be outside of the four white walls (of the building)," said [Dana Claxton], whose mother Ellen was Lakota Sioux from the Wood Mountain First Nation in southern Saskatchewan. According to Claxton's website, www.danaclaxton.com, her family traces its roots to the migration of Sitting Bull and the resulting Lakota and Sioux settlements in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Claxton, who has been exhibiting various forms of art for the past 20 years, is also thrilled for another reason. "My work is with a group of leading video artists," said Claxton, adding besides sports, her Anwolek Regatta...

  • I know from my own experience that it's really hard if you see a sign that you don't know, either in a class, in a video you've been assigned to watch, or even if you see it on the street, to figure out what it means," said linguistics professor Carol Neidle, one of the project's lead researchers along with BU's Stan Sclaroff and Vassilis Athitsos at the University of Texas-Arlington.
