Their light-armoured vehicle hit an "improvised explosive device" in the troubled Zhari district about 50 kilometres west of Kandahar City, Brig.-Gen. Guy Laroche said.
This isn't a question of experience," Laroche said about his troops. "At the level of tactics being used by the enemy -- these are tactics that are vicious, to say the least," referring to IEDs, which have proved to be one of the deadliest weapons used by insurgents against coalition forces.

Canadian policy makers have repeatedly emphasized improving relations with Brazil as a strategic objective in the Americas. Given past failures to cooperate, this objective may be difficult to realize. We argue that one of the reasons for this unrealized relationship between Canada and Brazil within hemispheric institutions is different national approaches to the role and purpose of multilateralism. This argument is advanced through an analysis of national interpretations of each country's engagement with multilateralism, drawing on the local literatures. The paper concludes with a discussion of the prospects and limits of future multilateral cooperation between the two countries, drawing on examples from the Inter-American System.

Peacekeeping has a place of pride in the Canadian national identity. Canadians feel that their nation is a natural leader in this international endeavour. How is this national identity expressed, and howhas it come about? Is it justified? An answer to these questions requires a probe of Canadian public and military attitudes, a historical review of Canada's peacekeeping activities, and an examination of current Canadian contributions. The final question is: What is needed if Canada is to live up to the image of the proud and prolific peacekeeper?
