I was reminded of it again last month when I heard that [Larry Norman] had died at the age of 60. But I was also reminded of the important role his music had played in my life, and in the world of Christian contemporary music. His album Upon This Rock, released in 1969, created a whole new kind of music called "Jesus Rock," with Norman being one of the original "Jesus freaks." His 1972 album Only Visiting This Planet is still regarded as one of the top contemporary Christian music albums of all time.
Norman's songs touched on topics and ideas never before explored by Christian artists. In Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music, he sang: "I want the people to know that He saved my soul/but I still like to listen to the radio." And, "I ain't knocking the hymns/just give me a song t...

Things are different today, he says. While boomers fought to get rock music into the church, their kids -- who grew up with it -- want to push it in new directions and redefine Christian rock music altogether. "Many of today's Christian rockers aren't as willing as their parents to listen simply to songs' messages," he says. "They want to hear stuff that's out in front musically, too.
For [Andrew Beaujon], groups that are on the musical edge in the Christian rock music world include Mewithoutyou, P.O.D., Switchfoot, and Underoath. They are groups that don't find it necessary to pay attention to what the Christian music industry calls "the Jesus per minute factor" -- the appropriate number of times that the word "Jesus" should be used in a song. According to Beaujon, they are bands whic...

It's 90 minutes of cardio for Jesus," she says. "There's no rest for the crowd, none at all. Sometimes I tell the crowd, 'They forgot to put the sign on the door; you will lose weight during the show.' Sometimes the ladies, when they come on stage to dance, they take off their shoes.
"I asked the Lord, 'What should I do?' so I sang Amazing Grace a cappella and ([Allen Bailey]) called me out into the hall and said, 'You are a singer. You should have been pursuing this all along,'" [Olivia Hunter] recalls.
"God has been extremely awesome to me. He has blessed me beyond my own understanding," she says. "In part of my bio on MySpace, I let people know I am the living example that God will give you the secret desire in your heart. I always was a singer since I was eight or 10, and he push...

The apostles are seated in groupings of three," [Jeari Czapla] said. "There are three windows behind Jesus, and the shape of the Jesus figure resembles a triangle.
"He went the route of writing a book," said Czapla, who is half Polish, half aboriginal. "I am confident that what I've found is the true version."
"Why would there be a correlation between notes and bread?" he asked. "Why not the placement of heads? Why not the plates on the table? I suspect that one could find 'music' in almost any horizontal image of a dinner table of numerous folk."

Some of us are more obsessed than others," says Liptonians guitarist Bucky Driedger. "I'm somewhere in the middle. I hadn't really listened to it until I went to university. But you hear the songs once, and it's one of those records that imprints itself in your brain.
"We looked into buying rights, and it wasn't even possible," says Driedger. "Moneywise it was, uh, lots. We're not doing anything grand enough to run into any legal issues, but we're phrasing it that way just in case."
Still, the crew is getting into character. They've trimmed the musical down to an hour (there's no Peter and they're ending on a "happy note," prior to the crucifixion), but they're keeping the narrative alive with some acted bridges. And they've been clocking in "marathon rehearsals" to master the challen...
