I was reminded of it again last month when I heard that [Larry Norman] had died at the age of 60. But I was also reminded of the important role his music had played in my life, and in the world of Christian contemporary music. His album Upon This Rock, released in 1969, created a whole new kind of music called "Jesus Rock," with Norman being one of the original "Jesus freaks." His 1972 album Only Visiting This Planet is still regarded as one of the top contemporary Christian music albums of all time. Norman's songs touched on topics and ideas never before explored by Christian artists.
