  • Performed by violinist John Racaru, cellist Andrea Bell, clarinettist Lori Freedman and pianist Max Fleischman, the work's urgent emotions grabbed the audience and didn't let go until the final note. Also on the program was Winnipeg composer Sid Robinovitch's Mezinkeh, based on a Yiddish song by Morris Warshavsky. This piece was full of spirit, humour and sentimentality.

  • [Dvora Marcuse] came to Winnipeg from Montreal in 1971 with her second husband, Fred, and four children. Fred was a professor of psychology at the University of Manitoba. Although Dvora began her musical career in Montreal as a soloist and chamber player with the Pro Musica Society and recording artist on the Erato label, some of her finest moments were reserved for her time here in Winnipeg. Dvora seemed to be at every concert in the city, from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (where she never missed a New Music Festival show) to GroundSwell and the Winnipeg Chamber Music Society series. Recognizable by her wild hair and trademark white sneakers with fluorescent green laces, Dvora would stop to chat with many a fellow audience member. On Saturday, Sept. 13, Virtuosi Concerts is presen...

  • The weekend's fiesta, Música Hispánica, was the second concert in the 13-voice, a cappella choir's three-show season. The afternoon also featured a special guest appearance by local Latin sensation, Rodrigo Muñoz (Papa Mambo), making his debut with the Renaissance group in the glorious acoustics of St. Mary's Cathedral. The program also included 20th-century Finnish composer Rautavaara's Suite de Lorca (1973), based on a set of four poems by famed Spanish poet Lorca. Filled with tightly clustered harmonies -- what the Finns seem to do best -- and limpid chromaticism, the choir performed this dramatic work with powerful conviction. The edgy Malgueña with its sweeping lines over a rhythmic ostinato was a highlight.
