[Clark Blaise]'s mother came from Wawanesa, graduated from Winnipeg's Wesley College, and taught in Manitoba before moving to Europe. She returned to Canada in 1937 as head decorator at Eaton's Montreal store.
As Blaise explains in these witty and charming essays, she met and married Leo Blais (the e was added later), a former boxer, a runner of booze from Montreal into the U.S. during Prohibition, "a salesman, a violent, aggressive, manipulative man specializing in the arts of spontaneous misrepresentation.
Despite the editorial efforts of [John Metcalf] and [Struthers], many points are repeated in these 18 pieces ([Bernard Malamud]'s definition of fiction -- "the dramatization of the multifarious adventures of the human heart" -- appears at least three times). Also, Blaise's book Man...

Intercultural communicative competence has been widely accepted as the aim of EFL teaching. In order to obtain this competence, Culture teaching must be implemented in the college English teaching. Textbooks have played a very important role in the course of teaching and learning. Textbooks introduce students the cultures of different countries and regions, thus making it convenient for students to exert a relatively remarkable influence on the fostering of students' cultural awareness and competence of intercultural communication. This paper focuses on the content analysis of the cultural content in College English (New) (henceforth, CE (New)).

[John Carroll Lynch] is sufficiently miffed by Dubya's victory, he hooks up with an organization called MarryACanadian.ca to officially renounce his nationality. But once he and Chloe arrive in Winnipeg, John finds himself getting defensive in the face of condescending Canucks, including his designated Canuck bride (a nice randy turn by local actress Adriana O'Neil) and the city hall clerk (Mike Bell) who attempts to facilitate his marriage of convenience.
While this teen comedy was filming all over the 'Peg in 2006, it was titled Nothing But the Truth. At that time, some crew members were buzzing about the film's unlikely star, 17-year-old Ryan Pinkston, who was best known as one of the expert pranksters on the Ashton Kutcher series Punk'd.
Watch for: A cameo appearance by the lovely a...

This study investigates the inter- and intra-comparison of life and work values held by managerial employees working in large and well-established organisations in Singapore. Three groups of workers, namely the Singaporean Chinese, Japanese expatriates and PRC Chinese expatriates were surveyed to measure life and work values and job satisfaction. Our findings have demonstrated that there are significant variations in the life values and work values amongst the three nationalities. However, the Japanese and PRC Chinese expatriates shared similar life values, thus exemplifying the effects of Confucian Dynamism. At the intra-level, differences in the occupational level exert little influence on the life values of the three national samples and the work values of the Singaporeans; differenc...

Re: Santa Claus is out at Souris School (Nov. 27.) Souris School principal Glenn Wallmann reported that there will be no Christmas concert this year for children from Kindergarten to Grade 4. Instead, they will have a "Winter Festival." Neither will the Grade 5 students present their usual Christmas musical, which will be replaced by a different musical later in the year. (Presumably to avoid any mention of Christmas.) "We're doing this for educational reasons," he stated.
Slowly but surely our traditions are being eroded by our ill-advised notions of political correctness. Is no one listening? Does no one care? Newcomers to Canada of whatever nationality or religious beliefs, should respect our traditions just as Canadians would be obliged to respect theirs were the situation reversed....
