The report tracked only acute pesticide poisonings -- those resulting in immediate effects, such as blistering of the skin, respiratory distress, heart palpitations and vomiting. Suspected chronic effects of pesticides, such as a higher risk of cancer, neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, birth defects and organ damage, were not taken into account in the study. Knowing the numbers we're seeiIlana SimonIlana Simonng in the rest of the country, it's unthinkable that Manitoba would have such a startling few number of pesticide poisonings," said [Anne Lindsey]. "It's important for public policy decisions," said [David Boyd]. "It can identify the magnitude of the problem and what steps might be taken to protect the public.

In May 2003 Canada's Food Inspection Agency announced that a single case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) had been diagnosed in a native bom Canadian cow. In the aftermath of this announcement, the United States closed its border to Canadian beef and live cattle exports. At the time, the United States accounted for nearly all of Canada's live cattle and the majority of its beef exports, so the loss of this market was critical. By September 2003 the border reopened to beef exports from cattle less than 30 months of age, but it would be over two years before cattle under 30 months would be admitted. This article outlines the consequences of the border closure on Canada's cattle industry and considers the obstacles to lessening its dependence upon the US market.

Bertha, 75, who has been in Riverview's long-term care unit for the last 12 years, was folding wash cloths for fellow residents when she said "I like it -- I like to be here. When you get to know people, there's a lot of stress because it's a loss for our staff too," [Sandra Stewart] said. TO help fund the Riverview Health Centre Foundation's continuing work, there's still time to buy tickets to The Event -- Designer Competition Auction and Dinner on April 23, starting at 5:30 p.m., with cocktails and dinner at 6:30 p.m.

It's a huge change because I'm moving from something where I've had kind of a lifetime of learning, because I've been an academic all my life, you know, I've been a student my whole life. And the research work that I'm doing is coming along really well, I'm really loving my job, and it's really hard to think of the idea that suddenly I'm not going to be doing that all the time and I'm not going to be at the university where I feel that I know a lot of people, I know a lot of things that go on and things are very familiar. And then, all of a sudden, boom, I'm in a totally new job, I really don't know anybody and I don't really know anything. It's like, 'Oh, how am I going to manage that?' It will involve the travelling back and forth. And so then I have to sort out, 'Well, how am I goin...

As well, the PMRA has so far failed to receive from the industry the vital 2,4-D neurological data, and has not taken into account the special vulnerability of children. So the PMRA intends to re-register 2,4-D despite this agency's own admission that it was lacking dioxin, neurological and child data. 2,4-D testing is arranged and paid for by several major chemical companies represented by the Industry's Task Force II on 2,4-D Research Data. The testing in special labs is done on rats. However, rats have detoxification genes missing in humans. "The millions the Task Force pays to both agencies (EPA and PMRA) to re-register the product results in a system that is highly corrupt" (Jim Bender, Woodstock's Sentinel-Review, July 4, 2006). An important shortcoming in 2,4-D's and other produc...

The EU's REACH program began on June 1, when it required that every company register chemicals sold in the EU, in bulk or in consumer products. Companies must reveal the chemical composition and toxicity of their consumer products and must finance their own toxicity studies. All of this information will be entered into a public registry. Until a company proves the safety of its product, it cannot be sold in the EU. On the level of depth and breadth of coverage, the REACH program wins on both accounts," John Margeson, Industry Canada's chemical specialist, said. There is also no obligation for the government to keep a dangerous chemical off the shelves. The law gives the government up to two years after assessing a chemical to take action, but does not oblige it to ban a dangerous chemi...
