Esteli is about four hours north of Managua along the Pan-American Highway and, with an elevation of 856 metres, is cooler than the southerly flatlands. The shops are packed with rows of leather goods -- cowboy boots, saddles, belts: this is cattle territory. It's also prime tobacco-growing land and the local artist community is also well-represented with rows of pottery for sale. The noisy Pan-American Highway slashes through the east side of town; Esteli is the last major town before the Honduran border.

The first shipment of 40 newer used computers arrived in Managua earlier this year, [Pastor Dan Krebs] said. He got the idea to send Winnipeggers' used computers to Nicaragua after visiting the church in Managua that was appealing for newer, used computers. When Krebs returned to Winnipeg, he saw a story in the Free Press about the lack of recycling facilities for used computers and electronics.
Nicaragua is the second-poorest country in Latin America and school isn't available to low-income families. It's estimated that 30 per cent of Nicaragua's children have no access to education. Computers are out of reach for most Nicaraguans.

Starting today, Pastor Dan Krebs and a committee at Evangel Chapel are collecting newer used computers and sending them to a church that helps "the poorest of the poor" in the capital city, Managua.
We're sending them technology they need," said Krebs. He got the idea from a Free Press story the day after returning to Winnipeg from Nicaragua.
"We're not shipping them junk," said committee member Dave Penner. The computers they'll accept must have a Pentium 3 processor or better and be no more than seven years old.
