We are leaving with deep regret," said Horace Bhopalsingh, president of Angostura Canada."The parent company could no longer sustain the Winnipeg operations. It was a very difficult decision.
Angostura Canada had also branched off into the manufacturing and bottling of non-alcoholic beverages, including Pic-a-Pop, a retro soda brand, and Totally Organic Beverages, a producer of organic vodka. Representatives from both Winnipeg-based firms could not be reached for comment.
Angostura is the second company to have failed to make a go of it in the 55,000-square-foot plant on Saulteaux Crescent in the Murray Industrial Park. It purchased the assets of Maple Leaf Distillers, including production equipment, real estate, warehouse space and brand trademarks in December 2005. Maple Leaf, ide...

CULTURE SHOCK: You'll think you're in Las Vegas when the sparkling bikini-clad, feather-tailed and headdressed, high-heeled showgirls shake their stuff provocatively for 10 minutes onstage. If this doesn't fit your idea of family entertainment you might want to take a pass.
FOOD: If you caught the menu at last week's Hungarian pavilion, you'll be equally satisfied; if you didn't, now's your chance. Hearty beef goulash or jam-packed cabbage rolls for $4, as well as sugar-dusted fry bread and a saucy chicken crepe.
SHOW: This year's "That's Astronomical!" variety show searches for its own galaxy of "stars." You'll even get to hear operatic numbers and a warbling Galileo.

We don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for those fees. We'll virtually be bankrupt," [Bruce Cran] said. "We're the only consumer group that speaks out on issues at all in Canada. If we're gone, that will leave Canadians without a voice.

* Manitoba's award-winning D.D. Leobard winery is in the process of changing its packaging, shifting the bottle size on some of its "Fruit on Fruit" wines from 750 ml to one litre. The price, however, will stay at $7.49, making them some of the best values in the fruit wine market.
* I've had my nose buried in a great wine-related book as of late. History in a Glass: Sixty Years of Wine Writing from Gourmet (Modern Library, 2006) compiles some of the best wine-related articles from Gourmet magazine, working chronologically through the decades. Early articles offer incredible insight into the struggle of California wineries to regain their footing following Prohibition, as well as detailing food and wine experiences in post-war Europe. Later articles focus on developments in the U.S. win...

Federally, several government departments and agencies are involved in the food-safety system. The most direct stakeholder is the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which was created in 1997 to amalgamate all federal food safety enforcement and inspection services. While the creation of the CFIA clarified the roles and responsibilities of various departments, the need for checks and balances is still acknowledged.
To protect our consumers, protectionism and an increased emphasis on "buy local" programs are only part of the answer. Judicious strategies to communicate risks to consumers are vitally important as means to educate the public about the complexities of modern food distribution channels. It is not the quantity of recalls that will matter in the future, but rather the quality of ...

NANCY Ames hopes to give a whole new meaning to the term 'barley sandwich.'
Ames said barley has health benefits that rival those of oats, which has been recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its ability to lower cholesterol. The health claim for oats made that crop an overnight sensation and is one of the reasons for the success of Portage la Prairie's Can-Oat Milling plant, which supplies several American food company giants.
Ames said there's evidence foods made from barley may also help reduce the risk of certain cancers because of the grain's antioxidant properties. And there's also research to suggest barley could be helpful in lowering the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
