It's a dream come true," said Kanius before a graduation ceremony Sunday at the Minto Armoury. "As long as I can remember we'd be going to these air shows and these military displays, probably at the age of eight years old. We'd go every year and it'd be fascinating.
"In both, you're in service," he explained. "In nursing, you're caring and nurturing and in the army you serve. Both are careers where you do good. You're not just working for yourself, you're doing it for others.
Kokopenace is only in Grade 12 and is planning to go into either psychology or veterinary studies. Joining the reserve gives her a head start on her life, she said. "I'm taking a step further in my life," she said. "I started young. I know I'm going to be in this for a long time. I wanted to do this for life."

[Sterling Clarren] said there are no separate diagnoses for mild or severe FASD -- compared to other disorders like autism, where a high-functioning child could be diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. That gap has left many FASD children struggling, since the diagnosis doesn't always lead to children getting the proper supports they need in school or at home.
In Winnipeg, FASD diagnoses are made through the Clinic for Alcohol and Drug Exposed Children at Children's Hospital. The clinic diagnoses about 200 youth with FASD every year -- the tip of the iceberg, according to researchers.
Dr. Jonathan Down said part of the solution is making FASD part of the core curriculum for family medicine, nursing, education and law. Currently, FASD is considered more of a specialty field, despite the fac...

This is a fascinating industry," says Gloria O'Rourke, vice president human resources with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA). "We are the largest employer in the province with 27,000 employees in hundreds of types of jobs. There are endless opportunities.
"Nursing will always be in demand, especially specialty nursing like critical care, ICU, emergency and dialysis," says O' Rourke. "There are also always vacancies for health care assistants."
"We take professional accreditation seriously. People must qualify and be registered, when applicable. And, all of our jobs, whether or not they are directly related to patient care, are caring occupations. We want to attract people dedicated to the mission of caring," says O'Rourke.
...Among the most in-demand professional careers here are in nursing, health care aides, respirator...

The project is really about getting more Aboriginal people into the health care system, working within the health care sector in a variety of positions." [Petrucka] said. "And the reason for that ... is basically to be a more representative workforce, to meet the needs of our Aboriginal clients, to provide role models and mentors for Aboriginal youth and people coming into the workforce that may want to actually be more active participants in the system. And we're keenly interested in being able to ensure that our systems are allowing or enabling Aboriginal people to be better represented within the health care system.
"It's going to be rooted in what the community, the NITHA community, identifies as their needs," Petrucka said. "Usually what happens in many research cases is that oft...

Work life, family life and care are all being substantially re-shaped in Australia as in other post-industrial societies. Concern about work/life balance has increased as domestic gender relations slowly change, the breadwinner/homemaker model becomes less dominant and families undertake more demanding and flexible modes of employment and care. Using data from a qualitative study of nurses and their families this paper explores how families are managing the contemporary intersection of flexible family life and flexible labour. Family values emerged as an important mediating factor in the organisation of work and care. The couples valued parental and time with children and used shift work enable family life. We argue that just as the breadwinner model is being modified in so too is the m...
