THE city's five new councillors will be sworn in Tuesday during an evening ceremony at city hall. Newly elected councillors Grant Nordman, Jeff Browaty, Brenda Leipsic, Dan Vandal and Scott Fielding will join Mayor Sam Katz and 10 returning councillors as they take the oath of office in what's traditionally a semi-formal ceremony attended by family and friends. The real work begins with a short council meeting Wednesday morning when the councillors get their committee appointments.

It is common for parents/families in traditional settings, whether in Africa or China, to pair their children/members in marriage often without their consent. This specific mate selection practice, arrangement, is used to designate marriages in these settings: the so-called arranged marriages. Observations about this mate selection practice are then posited as conclusive evidence of change in these marriages. This paper attempts an exploratory clarification of marriages in traditional Africa in two ways. First, it uses the marriage system of the Okrikans to reveal that arranged and non-arranged marriages coexist, each administered by and organized around distinct institutions, with differing consequences for family membership, inheritance and other important issues. Second, it breaks do...

During Wednesday's recitation of the oath, the minister raised her right hand and renewed the oath she took almost 24 years ago. Later, [Flo Marcelino] said she was honoured to host her first citizenship court ceremony as the minister responsible for multiculturalism. "I've been to so many citizenship swearing-in ceremonies, but this is very special for me.
Samuel Smal said his family feels much safer in Canada, referring to South Africa's high murder rate. "Initially when we landed in [Gillam] we didn't even lock our doors." Smal's children were all very young when they came to Canada; 10-year-old Carina was just a baby then. "I've always felt like I was part of Canada so the ceremony was just more official," said [Andries], who was six when his family arrived in Manitoba.

They did not actually say that "greed is not good," but the oath taken on June 3 by more than 400 students graduating from Harvard Business School amounted to much the same thing. At an unofficial ceremony the day before they received their MBAs, the students promised they would, among other things, "serve the greater good," "act with the utmost integrity" and guard against "decisions and behavior that advance my own narrow ambitions, but harm the enterprise and the societies it serves.
The second complaint is that the oath's fine words are toothless. There are few clear-cut injunctions along the lines of the Hippocratic oath for doctors, which commands physicians: "First, do no harm." It is hard to define, let alone measure, managing "in good faith" or acting "in an ethical manner." B...

This doesn't mean I'd have an aversion to enjoying a good old inauguration. I like traditions. And that's one thing this event provides in abundance. I'd love to be invited to observe the inaugural luncheon. It occurs after the oath is taken and the address is complete. This year, they're serving seafood stew, a brace of American birds (pheasant and duck) and apple-cinnamon sponge cake. Seeing that a brace has yet to make a Tim Horton's menu, I'm uncertain what a brace of bird actually is. Perhaps it's something the butcher tells the birds before they meet their demise: "Brace yourselves, you're about to be lunch!
