Prior knowledge has been shown to facilitate both supervised and unsupervised category learning, but questions remain about how this facilitation occurs. This article describes two experiments that investigate the effects of prior knowledge on unsupervised learning, using the exemplar-memory task of Clapper and Bower (2002). Experiment 1 demonstrates that prior knowledge facilitates learning in this task, as expected, and that this facilitation extends to both knowledge-relevant and knowledge-irrelevant features of the new categories. Experiment 2 shows that knowledge facilitates learning not only by increasing the probability that people will discover separate categories, but also by making the features of different categories seem less interchangeable, thereby reducing interference an...

Take at least 500 milligrams of vitamin C daily. It's a major antioxidant and evidence is accumulating that it decreases the risk of aging problems such as cataracts. Recently, observational studies by Dr. Sydney Bush, an English eye doctor, show that high doses of C (3,000 to 6,000 mg) daily can reverse atherosclerosis. It's ironic that tens of millions of dollars are spent on cholesterol research, yet vitamin C studies go begging for funds. Remember that animals make their own vitamin C while humans have lost that ability.
If you don't exercise these days, you feel like you've been caught with your hand in the cookie jar. But I have a confession to make. I hate, hate, hate the repetitive motions of jogging or the treadmill and have avoided it. This decision may be to my detriment. But...

Psychocardiology (often termed "behavioural cardiology" in North America) refers to the study of biopsychosocial factors in the emergence, course, and rehabilitation of cardiac diseases. The diree editors of this text, a psychosomatic researcher, psychoanalyst, and cardiologist, note at the outset that, although research in this area has been extensive, they believe the findings are seldom applied in clinical settings. Thus, their decidedly ambitious goal is to provide reviews that could serve as authoritative sources for the formulation of guidelines by scientific societies and institutions like the World Health Organization (WHO). This process began in 1998 with a "Psychocardiology Status Conference" in Germany during which 32 scientists from five countries met to review the existing ...

The increasing involvement of anthropologist in health issues has intensified debate concerning the substantive contributions to be made by this discipline and the types of strategies to be encouraged by its professionals in the promotion of culturally appropriate public health programmes. There are many ways of approaching the problems of health and disease in a population. Anthropological investigations tend to focus conceptually on the complex changes in patterns of health and disease and on the interactions between these patterns and their biologic, sociologic and demographic determinants and consequences. This paper is an attempt to explore mainly on the analytic anthropological research paradigm in the understanding of health problems in cross-cultural settings.

Children constitute an important target market segment and merit attention from a marketing perspective. The role that children play in making decisions concerning the entire family unit has prompted researchers to direct attention to the study of influence of children. The amount of influence exerted by children varies by product category and stage of the decision making process. For some products, they are active initiators, information seekers, and buyers; whereas for other product categories, they influence purchases made by the parents. The purchasing act is governed by how they have been socialized to act as consumers. Family, peers, and media are key socializing agents for children wherein family-specific characteristics such as parental style, family's Sex Role Orientation (SRO)...
