The company statement didn't say how long production would be suspended. It said only that Tantalum's Boston-based parent company -- Cabot Corp. -- will continue to operate its other tantalum production facilities and has enough raw material from inventory and other sources to meet anticipated demand.
The employee said that in addition to tantalum, the Bernic Lake mine produces spodumene, which is used in making glass and ceramics, and pollucite, a cesium chemical used in offshore oil drilling rigs. He said employees were told the recession and lower oil prices have also reduced the demand for pollucite.
