This article focuses on rural girls' aspirations of becoming migrants in a setting where girls are subjected to social constraints curtailing their movements in the midst of an otherwise mobile society, where mothers and grandmothers frequently recall their experiences in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and boys set off on their first migration in their mid- or late teens. However, the high level of mobility affects both intergenerational relations and the ways in which girls can justify their wish to migrate. Based on multi-sited ethnographic research between 2002 and 2008 in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, the article explores the ways in which images of success and material wealth of (trans)national migrants feed into adolescent girls' imaginations of migration and its outcome. Furthermore,...

This study used the 2002 South Africa General Household Survey (GHS) to explore differentials in household structures and socioeconomic characteristics. Household structures by gender of head were examined to inform the types of household that females are more likely to head compared to males. The study found that females are more likely to form extended households than males. Household size in female headed households was also found to be larger than that in male headed households. The study utilized principal component analysis to estimate wealth of households. Wealth estimate results indicated that female headed households are poorer than male headed households. However, comparison between female headed households in urban areas and male headed households in rural areas indicated tha...

I find it petty that the NDP would even think of staging a press conference (with a long list of female MLAs present, no less) in response to [Jack Reimer]'s description of [Erin Selby] as a "prop." While Reimer may have apologized for his comments, I have no problem describing her as such, and it has nothing to do with gender. Indeed, if the NDP had chosen Jimmy Mac or Jon Ljungberg (both from CityTV) to run as a candidate against a 17-year incumbent, I would see that as a vain attempt to use local celebrity (however weak it may be) to win votes. It's distressing enough when the NDP has to resort to using mediocre celebrity status in order to topple a man who has done lots for his community, but it's outright shameful when the NDP resorts to playing the "gender card" on a statement tha...
