We know of his adventures because the conceit of the "memoirs" is that they are genuine; that in his old age [Harry Flashman] sets them down in "packets" which are discovered and fall into [George MacDonald Fraser]'s hands. They ring true because Harry is so unashamedly honest about his own failings that it seems likely that he's equally honest in his assessments of others and his times.
Flashman fans will be mourning Fraser, of course, but also the fact that the old fool, as Flashy would have called him, kept putting off writing Flashman's greatest adventure -- the defence of Rorke's Drift, a tiny outpost where 139 British soldiers repulsed 5,000 Zulu warriors in Natal during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
When the masses of Zulus arrive and the battle starts, Flashy volunteers to climb o...

When a NATO warplane bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade in 1999, I saw [Rupert Murdoch]'s reporters at Phoenix TV use the event to fuel an anti-American propaganda orgy while hesitating to report the Clinton administration's apology and admission that the bombing was a mistake. You expect the Chinese government to behave this way, but didn't Murdoch recently write that he has "always respected the independence and integrity of the news organizations" with which he is associated?
Not long after that, he cancelled publication of a memoir by Hong Kong's last British governor, Chris Patten, whom Beijing had branded a "tango dancer" and a "whore" for his pro-democracy policies. (Murdoch claimed in the Financial Times last week that he "to...
