The city's name is derived from those earliest settlers. It's a Cree word for Saskatoon berries: mis-sask-guah-too-min. The berries are available at grocery stores and gift shops, but the freshest are the ones you can pick yourself at The Berry Barn, located 11 kilometres south of the city. The 27-acre orchard of berry bushes has a U-Pick area, a restaurant, gift shop, green house and flower garden. Saskatoon has several parks located on both sides of the South Saskatchewan River and an extensive trail system over 50 kilometres long used by walkers, joggers and cyclists. Starting at Meewasin Park on the west bank, work your way south and check out the city's skyline at Capilano Lookout, see beavers, ducks and pelicans at the Mendel Riverbank and Island Sanctuary or take the kids to Kin...

IT'S not every day in a professional athlete's career that you get to watch your team go out and draft what they hope will be your eventual replacement, but such was the case when the Bombers took Corey Mace, 21, out of Wyoming with the third pick in the second round of the CFL draft last Wednesday. I don't know what the odds are for the pro team that you play for to draft someone out of your old high school that plays the same position as you and that signs with the same NFL team as you did, but it's astronomical enough to put me into the twilight zone perspective for this column. So in the spirit of information sharing between two possible future colleagues that may one day meet at their respective career cross roads, here is a little preview and re-visit of what Corey should expect ...

Almost 300 years ago, 50 musicians climbed onto a barge on the Thames and premiered Handel's Water Music for King George I. I found myself humming snatches of the catchy baroque suites as I crossed the Millennium Footbridge over the river a few days after a magical concert at St. Martin's in the Fields Anglican church. My partner and I wandered into Trafalgar Square at sunset on a Saturday night and were able to secure excellent seats to hear London's most talented young classical musicians perform in one of the world's most famous baroque music venues. London's theatre district has given itself over to tourist-oriented musicals, but it was first famous for edgy plays. As soon as we arrived in the city, we bought a Time Out guide at a corner store and picked the play that suited my nost...
