One of these, Clinch Park Beach, is an urban oasis conveniently located adjacent to Traverse City's downtown. To Manitobans used to the powdered-sugar sand along Lake Winnipeg, it's a bit brown and drab, but the water is clear and calm and there's a lifeguard and nearby park -- it's a great place for laps at dawn.
It's no sleepy little burg, however. In mid-August it was teeming with tourists and every restaurant had a wait, even at 8:30 or 9 p.m. And though it's a casual beach town, with flip-flops acceptable practically everywhere, it's also a moneyed place: The total worth of boats in the marina probably topped $100 million, and if you wanted to rent a 35-person yacht (and who doesn't, really?), it would set you back US$1,600 for a two-hour cruise.
