There's an old adage; divide spring-flowering perennials in fall and fall-flowering plants in spring. There's a certain amount of wisdom in that but, to be truthful, you can divide or move plants anytime throughout the season, though preferably after they've finished flowering. Just be sure when digging to disturb the root ball as little as possible, taking as much soil with that rootball as you can manage and get the plant into its new hole immediately. Be sure to water it well to help it settle in and watch it for the next few weeks for signs of wilting. One experienced gardener once told me he knew his soil was right because he could plunge his arm in it up to the elbow with little effort. Feed your soil, not your plants. [Marjorie Harris] created this book "for people who are baffled by empty spaces," but "it's also for people who have lovely gardens." She based the material on decades of questions she has been asked over and over again. She writes from experience, knowing full well a garden is never "finished," no matter how long ago it was started. Harris suggests planting the new garden in layers. Start with the trees and shrubs followed by large perennials, medium-sized perennials, bulbs, ground covers and, finally, annuals. Makes perfect sense. Before digging a bunch of holes in the ground, try out the new plants in place (in their pots) and reposition until the effect is pleasingly perfect. Work with small groupings of plants in one triangular area at a time. (It will help prevent planting in bori...
