  • This paper empirically examined the level of Japanese work organization and management techniques as practiced in PROTON. It has been argued that the Japanese work organization has been practiced and transferred more successful in the automobile industry because of its higher technicality. The PROTON-MITSUBISHI alliance has now been going for more than two decades (since 1982). Although PROTON has not yet been able to produce its own engine unless the CamPro engine with Waja model in 1999, this alliance is the best case to test the extent Japanese work organization is practiced to test the degree of transfer in the best sector and the best project to be studied. The discussion on Japanese influence on PROTON manufacturing systems to access the role of technological transfer done by Mits...

  • There are eight chapters in the book, organised in four sections. Chapter 1 "Creators of Culture" provides an overview of the basic tenet of the book - that climate demands and monetary resources influence each other's impact on culture. Dr. Van de Vliert further asserts that "climate and cash" interact to form integrated climatoeconomic niches. Chapter 2 "Climate Colors Life Satisfaction" summarises empirical support for the contention that a more demanding climate, leading to fewer resources, decreases culturally embedded satisfaction. The author illustrates that problems of unhappiness and suicide exist in regions with extremely cold winters, extremely hot summers, or both. In Chapter 3 "Cash Compensates for Climate," he explains how money resources make the difference between climat...

  • Rating formats can also affect overall reactions to the appraisal system. This is because rater and ratee reactions to the rating format can be considered a component of their overall reactions to the appraisal system. Poor, invalid ratings may be expected from raters who react negatively to the rating format. Specifically, a rater who responds negatively to the rating format adopted by his or her organisation may not take appraisals seriously, thereby potentially compromising the quality of performance ratings. Moreover, a rating format that is seen as onerous and cumbersome may lead to negative rater reactions such that raters may refuse to use the scale (Tannenbaum, 2006). More favourable rater and ratee reactions are expected when the rating format provide specific and clear indicat...

  • The first chapter, "Issues in Family Business: An International Perspective" by [Manfusa Shams] and Bjornberg, has too much background on defining family business (about 15 pages) given that this book is part of a management series and intended for researchers and practitioners in business. The psychological perspective on family is less than two pages and neither directly linked to family business nor international business. Chapter 2, "Teamworking in Organizations: Implications for Workplace Safety," compares research on safety in organisations between three types of groups: (a) health and safety committees, (b) autonomous work teams, and (c) cockpit crews. "Identity and Identification Processes in Mergers and Joint Ventures" is the title bf Chapter 3. This is a very interesting artic...

This paper seeks to contribute to the debate concerning middle power by examining middle power as a state of ideas rather than in the usual positional or behavioural terms. It is anticipated that this study will deepen our understanding of the middle power concept by providing an explanation as to its emergence, adoption, and embedment as the ideational framework within which Canada's foreign policy was formulated. The development of the middle power idea from 1941 until the Suez crisis in 1956 is examined.

  • It is apparent from the other papers in this special section on community psychology (CP) in Canada that we have a strong and rich, albeit brief, history and have made many contributions to promoting equality, health, and social justice in our communities both domestically and abroad. Furthermore, the multidisciplinary nature of our theories, along with our eclectic and participatory approach to research and social interventions, is necessary and relevant in our increasingly multicultural society and globalized world. Despite these strengths, CP is a relatively young and marginalized subdiscipline, especially in Canada. The marginal status of CP is observed within psychology departments, universities, psychology literature, work-settings, and the wider community ([Tim Aubry] et al., 201...

  • In Québec, community psychologists have played an important role in the definition and measurement of family violence and conjugal violence, as well as proposing interventions to prevent these problems. Following the lead of [Bouchard] ([Chamberland], Bouchard, & Beaudry, 1986), Québec community psychologists have collaborated with others on large-scale epidemiological investigations on the prevalence of child abuse (Clément & Chamberland, 2007; Clément, Chamberland, & Trocmé, in press), conjugal violence (Lévesque, Clément, & Chamberland, 2007), and the co-occurrence of these two forms of violence (Lévesque et al., 2007).
