I read Allan Levine's Double standard (Aug. 1) and I get the point. Israel's current actions in Lebanon are legitimate and justified and Israel values human life, otherwise it might just carpet bomb Lebanon and that would be that. But Mr. Levine, can you really justify this war by invoking the examples of the British in Canada, the allies in the Second World War, and then the United States in Afghanistan (and I presume Iraq)? Aren't we uncomfortably close to the old might-is-right argument? Is it really possible to legitimize war even when its on the moral high ground? Can we somehow pretend its a good war?
I agree that no black and white reading of Israel's problems will suffice. How indeed to achieve security surrounded by hostile and unwilling neighbours? So for six decades Israel ha...

Judicial alteration of the meaning of civil marriage from union of a man and woman to the union of any two persons raises a number of legal issues not raised by legislative redefinition; these are separation-of-powers issues centered in notions of the proper scope and role of judicial review, creation of standards to guide judicial application of broad and open-ended constitutional guarantees like equality, liberty, and dignity, judicial deference to the political branches, and the like. Here, Stewart examines whether the tasks of the judiciary in these areas are done well by citing appellate cases.

For several million years, a period 100 times greater than the entire known history of Homo Sapiens, the planet's destroyed ecosystems underwent a slow, laborious recovery. The earliest colonizers after the catastrophe were populous species that quickly adapted to degraded environments, the ancient analogues of rats, cockroaches and weeds. But many of the original species that occupied these ecosystems were gone and did not come back. They'll never come back. The extinction of a species, whether in an incinerated 65-million-year-old reef or in a bleached modern-day reef of the Caribbean, is forever.
Still, the primary concern here is the future welfare of us and our children. Assuming that we survive the current mass extinction event, won't we do OK? The disappearance of more than a few...

The paper takes a critical look at the current rebranding project in Nigeria in the light of the mounting predominance of poverty and food insecurity in the country. It argues that attempt to upgrade the image of Nigeria within and aboard without putting in place workable structures/programmes of "solutionalising" Nigerian endemic problems of poverty, food crisis, unemployment, epileptic power supply, and the likes makes the rebranding project abstract, cosmetic and a wishful thinking. Thus, the paper advocates that the rebranding should begin by addressing the leadership question, poverty, food insecurity, corruption and the decay in Nigerian education system.
