Health Canada wants Canadians to further limit their consumption of certain types of fish, because these so-called predator fish could contain high levels of mercury.
In new guidelines issued Wednesday, the department suggested Canadians should limit to 150 grams a week the amount of fresh and frozen tuna, shark, swordfish, escolar, marlin and orange roughy that they eat.
Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and women who might become pregnant should limit their consumption to 150 grams per month. Children aged five to 11 can safely eat 125 grams per month, but younger children should eat no more than 75 grams per month, the department cautioned.
