  • Glass is earth, because it's (made from) sand," she says. "You heat it with fire... It's tied in with the elements. And the glassworks [George Shannon] does are gorgeous. For instance, in tribute to Manitoba glass sculptor Ione Thorkelsson, who has worked with animal bones cast in glass, Shannon has created a "spine" from mechanical gears cast in glass. "My mom has been my guiding force," he says. "She's never once told me to go get a real job."

  • For the frame, mix equal parts latex paint and water-based glazing liquid. The glazing liquid will make the paint translucent, allowing the base colour to shine through. This adds shading and depth. Measure and tape off a border around the screen and a stripe across the centre, as shown in the photo. Always use low-tack painter's tape so you won't disturb the base coat when you remove it. To create a striae effect, apply the coloured glaze to the border with a foam brush, moving in one direction -- vertically down the sides, horizontally along the top and centre. Next, drag a paint brush through the wet glaze, producing fine lines. Remove the tape immediately, pulling carefully toward the wet glaze. To give the border more dimension, paint a thin shadow line along the inside top and on...

  • I grew up in Wolseley so I'm familiar with homes that have large porches and verandas. As a young teen, I would often sleep over at my friend's house and we'd get to spend the night in the screened-in porch on warm summer nights and listen to the crickets. It made for magical memories because it felt like we were camping out; sans bugs. The porch was also great during a rainy day when you felt like being outside but wanted to stay dry. A porch can be a special part of the home and therefore should be given some decorating consideration. Outdoor furnishings are great for a porch but not always necessary. Depending upon the layout of your porch and if the space has actual windows (versus just screened openings) feel free to decorate with soft furnishings as pictured. Washable furniture co...

  • Dark varnish had also made invisible a newly discovered small bonnet worn on the back part of Mona Lisa's head. The bonnet peeks through the varnish only with the aid of the NRC's high-tech laser vision. The NRC's 3-D imaging technology reveals even more than solvent can. It can peel back paintings layer by layer, examine the medium holding the paint (a half-inch, slightly warped, poplar panel in Mona Lisa's case) and identify both deliberate and accidental changes made over the years to the image. The wood panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted is sensitive to temperature and climate variations," the NRC concluded. "However, if its current storage conditions are maintained, there is no risk of degradation.

  • Spraying techniques are similar with either solvent or water-borne paints, although a different spray gun is used for the water-borne paints to provide the best finish. The biggest difference is in the environment the paint is sprayed in. Temperature and humidity must be controlled accurately when spraying water-borne paints or the water will not evaporate from the surface at the correct rate. Dryers can be used with water-borne paints, but instead of heat lamps, they use venturi nozzles that blow clean air onto the painted surface to help the water evaporate from the paint solids. Once the water has evaporated from the paint solids, the water-borne paint is as durable as a solvent-borne paint. If you have any doubts, just look at the durability of the factory paint finishes, and almost...

  • Once I start working, I get so involved I can't stop," says [EWA Tarsia], who pronounces her first name as Ava. "It's like I become part of the process. "Blue sky is very important to me," says Tarsia, a petite and vivacious woman who appears not to stand still. "I am a big lover of nature." "I don't like to talk money," says Tarsia, who has a solo show opening in August at the North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks. "People will think I'm wealthy, and I'm not."
