  • While psychological control and parental authoritarianism are thought to be distinct but related constructs (Barber & Harmon, 2002), the empirical relationships between measures of the constructs has not been assessed. This study examined these relationships, as reported by Chinese-Canadian and European-Canadian undergraduates. It also determined the extent to which participants' reports of their mothers' and fathers' authoritarianism and psychological control uniquely predicted undergraduates' own levels of depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. The associations between reports of parenting and these indicators of adjustment were similar in both groups. Across groups, there was evidence that the measures of psychological control and authoritarianism reflected distinct constructs, wh...

  • This paper is a cross-cultural comparison of how the broader social and cultural contexts have impacted the ways children perceive and define family functions, family structure, and roles within families. The sample included a total of 231 children aged 5 to 12 years and their parents from four countries: China, Ecuador, Turkey, and the US. Mixed methods including qualitative interview questions, dyadic scenarios using dolls as manipulations with children, and a parent questionnaire were utilized for measurement. Distinct differences were found among the four cultures regarding children's acceptance of traditional and non-traditional family structure and forms. Findings of this study provide important clues about how family-related concepts are being perceived and defined by children fr...

  • [...] there has been a growing awareness that if children's wishes and perspectives are taken into account in making post-separation parenting arrangements, it often promotes their social well-being.5 Increasingly, social science research has revealed that not listening to children may do more harm than good,6 and that children's meaningful participation in decision-making can reduce the negative effects of family breakdown.7 Further, children and adolescents are increasingly indicating that they want their "voices" to be heard in the legal processes that fundamentally affect their lives.8 The existing empirical research on children's desire to be included suggests that they want to be kept informed, and want their needs and interests heard.9 Adolescents, in particular, are much more li...

  • There is substantial research on the relationship between marital satisfaction and its effect on child development, with empirical evidence suggesting that marital conflict and dissatisfaction among the parents is predictive of poorer child outcomes. These findings are consistent with systems theory, which suggests that dynamics in one subsystem have an effect on other systems in the family. However, there is little known about how these variables apply to the Latino population. With Latinos now comprising the largest minority population, it is important to understand the effect of marital distress on child outcomes in Latino families. Data for the study come from a larger longitudinal study of 126 families living in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Each family had a child ranging in age from 3 to...

  • The current form of arranged marriage in Beirut, Lebanon, presents a window of freedom for couples to negotiate their aspirations and concerns and to develop a bond before they get married and thus provides insight into the communication that slowly advances and shapes the relationship. This research focuses on those possible relational dialectics that surface during the pre-wedding period of arranged marriages among the Sunni Muslim community in Beirut, Lebanon. Relational dialectics are the set of opposing forces, tensions or desires experienced by the couple as a result of being in a relationship. Those forces, such as the desire for intimacy or independence, may push the couple together or may pull it apart. Based on the relational dialectics theory, partners develop their relations...
