For those facing financial, timetable, supervision or philosophical problems with their children's activities, there are many easy-to-do, low-cost routes they can take to keep their kids stimulated and active. Check out the walk that you are going to take beforehand and then make a list of things that you want the kids to identify, like a scavenger hunt or a game of I-Spy. * Set up an Olympic course in your backyard, for a day or longer, and challenge your kids to toss water balloons, do the egg-on-spoon run, blow bubbles, juggle, hula hoop, cartwheel or do the limbo, with small prizes to the competitors. * Have a jigsaw puzzle or board game night.
Ethnic minorities in the United States and Canada, many of whom are newly naturalized, display low rates of political participation. I argue that these low rates of participation indicate a sense of exclusion from the polity they have joined. Previous explanations for low rates of participation material, contextual and institutional - all reflect a concern with exclusion. We have reason to focus directly zon the concept of belonging as a way to encourage newcomers to participate in politics. I suggest four policy proposals that focus on erasing this sense of exclusion, and thus on generating a sense of belonging, among newcomers to Canada and the United States. These policies, I hope, will encourage political participation among newcomers.
This paper analyzes the influence of child health and maternal physical and mental health on female labor force participation after childbirth in Germany. Our analysis is based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) study, which enables us to measure child health based on the occurrence of severe health problems including mental and physical disabilities, hospitalizations, and preterm births. Since child health is measured in SOEP at a very young age, we can rule out the reverse effects of maternal employment on child health that appeared in US studies.
