It's prime time for peonies, a perennial favourite in the prairie garden. So, it's only natural I would receive a couple of letters with questions about problems that have cropped up. The last letter's subject is one that arises with new gardeners who may not realize the vast choice of plant options available to us. For those who get discouraged I say try, try again. It was the very successful nurseryman, plant-breeder and author Tony Avent who once said, " I consider every plant hardy until I have killed it myself... at least three times. I've read reports that mildew can develop quickly when day and nighttime temperatures are vastly different. Symptoms are usually not fatal, though the condition is unsightly. Stunting or distortion of foliage and flowers plus a general decline of th...

With all the talk of belt-tightening for the holiday shopping season, I'm bemused by the some of the items offered for sale as gifts. A $100 professional martini maker that shakes or stirs the perfect cocktail comes with its own stainless steel shaker (which is mandatory for a martini) is a case in point. I don't know about you, but my arms have never been so tired, nor have I been so pressed for time that I couldn't shake up a martini in seconds myself using the old tried and true method. Must be why the device is on sale at 50% off. Speaking of stocking stuffers, a proper-fitting pair of gardening gloves or a shiny, sharp pruner are always appreciated as they have a tendency to get misplaced or wear out. You could pick out packets of seeds for next year's flower garden or vegetable pa...

Caryl Churchill's poetic magic-realist work, dating from 1994, is both haunting and funny. It's so weird, so brilliant and so deeply resonant, it almost defies description. It hits you where you live, at the level where fairy tales frightened you as a small child -- perhaps especially if you're a mother. You just have to see it. The final performances are this afternoon and tonight. The skriker starts off haunting Josie, but she makes a wish that it transfer itself to Lily. As a viewer you're deeply engaged with these vulnerable girls, even as they're experiencing fairy-tale horrors such as vomiting up toads. [Daina Leitold] and van Buekenhout maintain consistent, compelling characters no matter how fantastical the plot turns. There's wonderful humour and social commentary in Churchill'...

Reading by Lightning is a stunning Prairie novel, vast in its description of a family eking out a living in the dust and mud of a Manitoba homestead. Setting her book in the late 1930s and early '40s, [Joan Thomas] uses vivid language as she brings the reader into the world of Lily Piper, a teenager who seeks to understand "who she might become. Mr. Dalrymple preaches that the "Rapture" is about to happen. "There's a practised excitement in his voice," says [Lily], "but underneath he sounds naggy: this is a threat, not a promise." This novel has an interesting plot and is also wonderfully literary. There are simple descriptions: "Just before the sun sets, it breaks through a rip in the grey blanket." Or this: "Early summer swells into fullness and the hollyhocks tip forward with their ...
