The "reds" have been driven off the streets of Bangkok by the army, and the "yellows" who fought them last year have not come out in force either. For the moment, peace has been restored. Mullah Omar, despite what proponents of a negotiated peace in Afghanistan may say, is not a reasonable man. The Taliban leader, who was ousted as president of Afghanistan by the American invasion in 2002, is by any definition of the words, a fanatical brute. Any arrangement between the Taliban and the NATO forces fighting in Afghanistan that saw the terrorist leadership, including or connected to Mullah Omar, invited back into government through some sort of power-sharing agreement, as is frequently proposed, would make the eight-year war pointless.
