  • This study investigates the inter- and intra-comparison of life and work values held by managerial employees working in large and well-established organisations in Singapore. Three groups of workers, namely the Singaporean Chinese, Japanese expatriates and PRC Chinese expatriates were surveyed to measure life and work values and job satisfaction. Our findings have demonstrated that there are significant variations in the life values and work values amongst the three nationalities. However, the Japanese and PRC Chinese expatriates shared similar life values, thus exemplifying the effects of Confucian Dynamism. At the intra-level, differences in the occupational level exert little influence on the life values of the three national samples and the work values of the Singaporeans; differenc...

  • The teachers' union has been an enthusiastic supporter of Education Minister Peter Bjornson's $16- million tax incentive grant, which provides a cash bonus to school boards that agree to freeze taxes this year. St. James-Assiniboia school board chairman Bruce Alexander said accepting Bjornson's money would have required his board to cut 33 teachers' jobs. Some divisions, such as St. James-Assiniboia and River East Transcona, have decided Bjornson's cash bonus is not worth the deep cuts their students would have to suffer in teachers, programs and services.

  • Until the 1990s, school libraries were a low priority in the South Korean educational system. But the Korean government has now developed a five-year master plan for improving school libraries. Similarly, the government has undertaken significant educational reform in order to cultivate creative human resources through open education and lifelong learning. The implementations of these educational reforms are based on information and communication technology (ICT) in education and the seventh educational curriculum. In addition to these policies, the activity of NGOs has been effective in developing school libraries. Today, South Korea has a modern, well-developed school library system.

  • It is common for parents/families in traditional settings, whether in Africa or China, to pair their children/members in marriage often without their consent. This specific mate selection practice, arrangement, is used to designate marriages in these settings: the so-called arranged marriages. Observations about this mate selection practice are then posited as conclusive evidence of change in these marriages. This paper attempts an exploratory clarification of marriages in traditional Africa in two ways. First, it uses the marriage system of the Okrikans to reveal that arranged and non-arranged marriages coexist, each administered by and organized around distinct institutions, with differing consequences for family membership, inheritance and other important issues. Second, it breaks do...
