  • The Perennial Plant Association (PPA) has chosen Hakonechloa macra "Aureola" as its 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year. I love this ornamental grass. Commonly called Golden Japanese Forest Grass, this gorgeous garden perennial features a graceful, flowing form and golden foliage, making it a colorful ground cover or specimen, especially for shady areas. Its colour varies depending on where the grass is planted. In partial shade, the foliage will appear almost all-yellow, with narrow green stripes near the margins. In full sun, the foliage can bleach to a parchment white, and in full shade, it becomes chartreuse. When the weather gets cooler, the foliage turns a reddish-pink hue. • Other tree species are not so well managed. Varieties of ash trees such as green ash, black ash and Manchurian ash have been increasingly used throughout the city as well as in southern Manitoba largely as an easy way to establish replacements for American elm. Some of these ash trees are hybrid species that appear to be very promising as future additions in the urban forest. However within the last few years, a very destructive insect called the emerald ash borer has been destroying millions of ash trees in Michigan, northern Ohio, northern Indiana and southwestern Ontario. It kills swiftly and without biological impunity. To date there are no treatments to eradicate this pest except to remove the infested tree. It is heading north though Michigan and tolerates low winter temperatures....

  • While looking over these catalogues, you will no doubt come across a familiar symbol, the All-America Selections (AAS) symbol, which for years has been steering us in the direction of well-tested and proven seed varieties of flowers and vegetables. The trial grounds are typically located at universities, seed company plots, or horticultural institutions, and at least one volunteer judge (unpaid) is stationed at each trial ground to evaluate the trial varieties and to finally, at the end of the growing season, give each a score.
