  • This article focuses on rural girls' aspirations of becoming migrants in a setting where girls are subjected to social constraints curtailing their movements in the midst of an otherwise mobile society, where mothers and grandmothers frequently recall their experiences in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and boys set off on their first migration in their mid- or late teens. However, the high level of mobility affects both intergenerational relations and the ways in which girls can justify their wish to migrate. Based on multi-sited ethnographic research between 2002 and 2008 in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, the article explores the ways in which images of success and material wealth of (trans)national migrants feed into adolescent girls' imaginations of migration and its outcome. Furthermore,...

  • Happiness is defined by Veenhoven (2008) as "the overall appreciation of one 's life-as-a-whole, in short, how much one likes the life one lives" (p. 2, itaUcs in original). Seligman's (2002) work on authentic happiness focuses on an enduring experience of happiness. Sustainable happiness is relevant to essentially every definition of happiness. As a demonstration, consider the momentary pleasure of drinking a cup of coffee. Benefits of attending to and being mindful of the experience have been discussed by Brown and Kasser (2005) and Kabat-Zinn (2005). Viewed through the lens of sustainable happiness, this momentary pleasure can be placed in a wider context. Individuals can attend to whether that cup of coffee is fair trade coffee, which means that workers in the coffee plantation have...

  • The people saw they could use bamboo for many purposes. They can build buildings with it much cheaper (than concrete) and just as sturdy," explains Rev. Gerard Van Walleghem, of how 200 acres of bamboo is transforming the village of 25,000 in the Darjeeling district in India. "They can use bamboo for crafts, clothes, bridges. "The whole plantation has gone down," explains the retired teacher, principal and counsellor at the Jesuit-run St. Joseph's School in Darjeeling of why the plantation is being converted to an English-language secondary school for village children. "I admire him very much. He's a wonderful person. He's a great spiritual leader to everyone, no matter what their background," says Donna Brown, president of Dakshong Gonpa Retreat Centre in Lac du Bonnet.

  • Nevis, the smaller of the two, is named for its mist-covered 985-metre-high volcano that has lied dormant for thousands of years. Hikers often wander up and down Nevis Peak's meandering trails to get a taste of the island's diverse ecology and, more importantly, to catch a glimpse of the errant green vervet monkeys that have inhabited the island since the mid-1600s. I've been told they often come down from the cascading foothills in clusters after their "siesta" wraps up around 5 p.m. But right now, it's the southern stingrays and sea turtles we're after and our enthusiastic snorkeling guide has assured us there is no shortage of them here at Cockleshell Bay. I don't know," he says. "I think it's because I'm good to my mom. * Getting around: TC's Island Tours is a reliable and enter...

  • A Streetcar Named Desire is a famous play written by American playwright Tennessee Williams, for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1984. He is highly praised and eulogized for its delicate construction, refined writing, vivid characters and provoking thoughts. It mainly deals with the conflicts between two symbolic characters, Blanche DuBois-a fading gentlewoman of the Old South-and Stanley Kowalski, an industrial, urban immigrant with unrefined characteristics. In particular, Blanche, as the representative of delicate and fragile southern female images, has been the focus of discussion. This paper analyzes this typical controversial heroine from the perspective of feminism in terms of social culture, economic factor and women's psychology to find out the main factors...
