  • I usually appreciate Rolf Penner's articles on farming topics but Barley, free at last (April 4) seems very contrived. Most farmers voted for the option to retain the CWB as one buyer (over 48 per cent), and very few farmers voted to eliminate the CWB entirely (less than 14 per cent). Penner suggests the CWB role should be as a "value-chain maker." I am not sure what that means and I suspect it does not mean anything. If Penner and the Conservative government do not believe the CWB can be a competitive buyer, then they should say so and support a second vote without this meaningless option. On the other hand, if Penner and Chuck Strahl think the CWB can remain competitive, then they should explain how Strahl will have to provide the money for infrastructure so the CWB can make this happ...

  • I couldn't help but think that the side-by-side placement of articles on childhood obesity and eating disorders on the Health page in Wednesday's paper was a fortuitous reminder that these issues are related (Obesity expected to shorten kids' lives; Export of health dollars disturbing, March 28). And, as if to prove my point, Thursday's paper included an article about kids' risky efforts to lose weight (Kids' diet mantra: log in and get thin, March 29) which focused on kids' self-directed use of the Internet to lose weight. It's a great day now that farmers have voted to remove the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly on barley. Farmers competing with each other to sell their barley in an open market can only be beneficial to the economy. Competition is always a good thing. It helps drive pri...

  • Couldn't a small portion of the tickets we pay go towards requiring a signature upon delivery? In my case, I don't have much choice but to pay my ticket with the additional fee. Chances are the original letter was put in my neighbour's mailbox, a mistake easily made in apartment buildings such as mine. Whoever got the letter never cared enough to send it back or deliver it to me. Wouldn't it be nice if our justice system at least tried to make sure that there's no way we get overcharged for a simple mistake such as this? For decades, the Liberal party has depended on inflaming regional discord to maintain its power base, notably with Pierre Trudeau's national energy program, Jean Chr ©tien's blaming of the West for nearly every other problem and Paul Martin's dishonest lambasting of Alb...

  • There was an overwhelming demand (for bottles that don't) include BPA, and sales came to a complete halt on traditional bottles, so there's no reason for us to carry them. "From a moral perspective, I don't want to put anything on my shelf that is a question mark. So if I can put something on my shelf that's BPA-free, I will." "We recognize that we're not scientific experts. We rely on government to set standards and our vendors to comply with them. But as a national retailer, our customers are telling us they're concerned about this, and in the absence of additional government guidance, we believe it's important to give our customers the ability to buy BPA-free products," said Hillary Marshall, director of corporate communications for the Hudson's Bay Co.
