  • The evolution of journalistic style can be explored from multiple perspectives. The shifts of horizons between the narrator and addressee, the change of the communicative context and media, the similarities and differences of narrative modes, and the sequence of time structure can all constitute important research areas. The present essay is an investigation into the similarities and differences of journalistic styles between mainland China and Taiwan, with a view to proving that, apart from the subjectivity of the communicators, the change of communicative context is also a dynamic that brings about the accretion of alien elements in journalistic style as well as the formation of individuality. The essay will, by way of examining the evolution of the journalistic style in both the main...

  • Political risk analysis primarily receives attention for foreign direct investment (FDI) but only rarely for exporting. We examine how exporters and foreign direct investors evaluate the relative importance of political risk factors. We provide a rationale for exporters to evaluate political risk factors for FDI and for foreign direct investors to evaluate political risk factors for exporting. Survey data were collected from Canadian exporters and foreign direct investors and capture the distinctive nature of salient factors for exporting and FDI. We offer unique insights on the evolutionary character of political risk that are of practical value for both exporting and FDI.

  • Adolescence has been characterized by G. Stanley Hall, the first psychologist to advance a scientific theory of adolescence, as a period of "storm and stress" (Muuss, 1996: 16-17). Studies in the west indicate that adolescence is a time when conflict with parents increases sharply (Paikoff and [Jeanne Brooks-Gunn], 1991; Arnett, 1999). Several studies of adolescents' violent reactions towards their peers and elders in Taiwan also support this observation. A survey of junior high school students showed that 44% of adolescents regularly argued with their siblings (Kao, 1990). A study of adolescents' violent behaviors at junior high schools in Taipei reported that about 64% of male students had fights with their schoolmates and a study done in Kaoshiung indicated that 22% of students had v...

  • Canada is a country that likes to think of itself as having a foreign policy driven by the high ideals of liberal internationalism - what I take to be the advance of universally recognized and widely accepted human rights and the creation of effective and legitimate international institutions. An exceptional voice, Evans notes, was Chester Ronning, a Department of External Affairs official and later special envoy in Asia, who constantly urged closer ties, even solidarity, with Maoist China - including supporting its disastrous initiation of the Korean War and releasing a film based on his 1971 visit to the country praising the Cultural Revolution (Ronning 1974).
