You're gonna have to learn your cliches," [Davis] starts. "You're going to have to study them, you're going to have to know them. They're your friends. Write this down: 'We gotta play it one day at a time.'
The 'cliches are your friends' line came to mind last week when [Hugh McFadyen] was asked on the morning of a provincial byelection in Concordia about his party's chances. The pat response is something like, 'We have a great candidate in Concordia and he's worked very hard. At the door, voters have told us they are not happy with the NDP government.' Then, when voter turnout is low (which it almost always is in byelections), you can say it is a sign of voter despondency.

With his crisp hair and attractive smile, [Kaj Hasselriis] has staked his campaign on getting that elusive youth vote. He has attracted endorsements from local musicians The Weakerthans and Greg MacPherson. He has used quirky slogans, enlisted actors to demonstrate in front of city hall and has attended a number of events where young people congregate. Always playing the grassroots activist, his campaign has been about proving he's not a typical politician as well as demonstrating that he (and not Katz) knows what young people want.
Because a politician is familiar with "youth" culture or they stand up for "progressive" ideas doesn't mean students will be interested. If that were the case, U of M students would be supporting Hasselriis in droves. To be fair, Hasselriis, who is a youthfu...
