  • For those who oppose abortion, this is mass murder. For those who think abortion should be "safe, legal and rare" (to use Bill Clinton's phrase), a lot depends on the circumstances, but the cumulative consequence for societies of such individual actions is catastrophic. Wealth does not stop it. Taiwan and Singapore have open, rich economies. Within China and India the areas with the worst sex ratios are the richest, best-educated ones. And China's one-child policy can only be part of the problem, given that so many other countries are affected. Most obviously China should scrap the one-child policy. The country's leaders will resist this because they fear population growth; they also dismiss Western concerns about human rights. But the one-child limit is no longer needed to reduce ferti...

  • Canadian policy makers have repeatedly emphasized improving relations with Brazil as a strategic objective in the Americas. Given past failures to cooperate, this objective may be difficult to realize. We argue that one of the reasons for this unrealized relationship between Canada and Brazil within hemispheric institutions is different national approaches to the role and purpose of multilateralism. This argument is advanced through an analysis of national interpretations of each country's engagement with multilateralism, drawing on the local literatures. The paper concludes with a discussion of the prospects and limits of future multilateral cooperation between the two countries, drawing on examples from the Inter-American System.

  • Market expansion is a very important strategic option in the developing economies. Literature on marketing to the "bottom of the pyramid" and the "blue ocean" strategy has brought to the fore the issue of direct involvement of manufacturers or corporations in expanding markets. Though the "bottom of the pyramid" and the "blue ocean" strategy frameworks are important references for development of conceptual framework for market expansion, neither of these can be considered as a complete conceptualization in itself. The authors synthesize extant knowledge on the subject and provide a conceptual framework by looking into fundamental issues such as what is a market, what is market expansion, and what factors affect market expansion. Unlike in case of the "blue ocean" strategy framework, th...

Adams, University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA, and Professor Jan Trost, Upsalla University, Sweden, have jointly edited this comprehensive volume of family life in 25 countries in Africa, Asia and South Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America. (p. x) Those scholars, who are looking for comparison, could look at identical sections in particular family systems, like Chinese family formation with that of India, or divorce in India compared to the United States. On p. 131, second paragraph, Prof Singh mentions mat "the share of minorities, particularly Muslims and Christians, in Indian population has been steadily rising because of me poorer adoption of family planning measures and the policy of religious conversion p...

  • Peter Holle urged Winnipeggers to envision our city in 2011 as one operating on a "competitive model", relying on "advanced measurement techniques" and "eliminating bureaucracy". Coupled with performance bonuses, customer service surveys and public-private partnerships, Holle's vision is a dream for free-market policy wonks who live for technocratic efficiency. Sadly, his vision would be a dystopia for regular Winnipeggers. What Holle doesn't spell out is that his ideas would further widen the gap between the rich and poor in our city. Privatizing municipal services and contracting out would further weaken the quality of services we receive while simultaneously eroding the living standards of unionized workers. Performance bonuses for police would increase the ruthlessness of a service ...
