  • This paper contributes to an understanding of the historical development of management accounting by presenting an example of cost accounting practice in Portugal in the first half of the 18th century. It explores the integration of cost and financial accounting systems within a double-entry accounting framework by the Silk Factory Company (SFC) between 1745 and 1747. The SFC's methods of product costing, pricing, inventory accounting, expense recognition, and production control are reviewed within the political, economic, and social context of Portugal at the time. The SFC is revealed to have used job-order product costing, with allocations of overhead costs, allowances for wastage and shrinkage, and elements of rudimentary standard costing. Our findings provide evidence of the existen...

  • Portugal has become a year-round destination for Canadians with significant growth in visitor numbers from here over the last few years. It offers an excellent opportunity for long-stay guests, with a range of availability in condo-type units. Even though Manitobans seem to select the Algarve region for the most part, there are many other areas in which to stay and explore. Lisbon itself is a fascinating city. It has a huge area closed to traffic which draws thousands of visitors and locals daily. Shopping and dining options are close at hand to satisfy most tastes and budgets. Most Canadian long-stay visitors find the temperatures quite satisfactory over the winter. December and January can be coolish. However, by the end of February day temperatures are usually quite pleasant, even...

  • If you plan to dine out at all, be informed in advance of the following: In Canada, we take the bread on the table and the glass of water we request as a natural right. In Portugal you will pay for both. So unless you want bread don't even touch it as you will likely pay for it. The water will come from a bottle which you will pay for when you answer the question, fizz or no fizz, which means carbonated or non-carbonated. Do try to experience a number of regions of the country if you can. Canadians tend to favour the well-developed Algarve area. It is truly wonderful, but we found Lisbon to be an excellent city to visit, and the regions around Lisbon like Estoril are also excellent. It is close to Lisbon and offers its own history as a refuge for artists, writers, Jews and others who we...

  • I think we won against the best team here," Schweinsteiger said after collecting his man-of-the-match award. "It looks like Portugal could be the favourite team to play against. Germany went ahead in the 22nd minute when captain Michael Ballack's first-time pass allowed Lukas Podolski to streak down the left flank, beat Portugal defender Jose Boswinga and send in a low cross that Schweinsteiger tapped in from close range. Portugal striker Nuno Gomes pulled a goal back in the 40th minute, collecting the rebound after [Ronaldo]'s shot was blocked by goalkeeper Jens Lehmann and scoring after a deflection from Germany defender Christoph Metzelder.

  • BOCHUM, Germany -- Portugal isn't exactly George Mason, though its soccer pedigree isn't much stronger than what the Patriots brought to U.S. college basketball's Final Four. Then again, surprise teams in the World Cup semifinals are hardly a surprise. It's been more difficult to reach a semifinal with Portugal than the final with Brazil, because there are only 10 million inhabitants in Portugal compared to 180 million in Brazil," said Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, a Brazilian who led his countrymen to the 2002 crown, Brazil's fifth overall. "Also, 50 per cent of the players in Portugal are foreigners. Brazil's traditions make certain games easier to win, too.

  • The players want to appease their dispirited fans with a victory that would give it a shot at topping the standings, but coach Luiz Felipe Scolari isn't aiming so high after Saturday's lacklustre 1-0 home win over Armenia. Hugo Almeida, the Werder Bremen striker who scored the only goal against Armenia, has joined Portugal's long injury list with a thigh strain. He was replaced by Benfica's Nuno Gomes, who will get a 67th cap after missing Portugal's last three games because of injury. He is still one of the best at delivering set pieces or out wide," [Peter Crouch] said. "For someone like myself, who scores the majority of goals from crosses, he is certainly a player to have.

  • Our responsibility has to remain the same," said midfielder Raul Meireles, who scored Portugal's second goal Saturday. "When we got here we already knew that there would be a lot of people supporting us and we knew of our responsibility. We need to try to give back with our work and do everything we can to advance. "We knew there were a lot of Portuguese immigrants (in Switzerland)," Meireles said. "But we had no idea that so many would show up. We were surprised, but very happy." "We couldn't get tickets for the first one, so I'm thrilled to be here," 14-year-old Daniel Luzio said. "Especially after the great victory yesterday."
