  • After last week's column regarding my success in getting a reader's refund on an online booking, only after going to the president's office, I had a number of comments that I should have named the property involved. I struggled with that decision as I was writing the column, but the excuse given to me was that the website had not been updated, and the refund would not have been a problem if it had been. • PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- The curtain rises in a quaint theatre in Prague's tourist hub to reveal a sly libertine nobleman, Don Giovanni, trying to carry off Donna Anna, the Commandant's daughter. This is the first of many dramatic and comical scenes in Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, composed as a gift to Prague. When Mozart wrote the tale of the incorrigible lothario, chances are he envisioned a grandiose production filled with dramatic effects, impassioned scenes and larger-than-life characters. Today, they're part of the city's tourist industry too. You can barely wander down a street without encountering wooden stringed puppets beckoning you to watch them dance or take them home as a pricey souvenir. These marionettes, waiting to be brought to life at nearly every corner, also add to ...

  • The interviewer persisted and poor [Topolanek] was intent on opening every possible door. He was asked about what he thought of his wife's running for the Senate. Her campaign, he said, was a mistake but no doubt her revenge was sweet. The interviewer jumped in: What was the revenge that was sweet? The economy is so robust that it has survived a summer of non-existent government. In the general election of early June the Civic Democrats beat by a small margin the incumbent government of the Social Democrats. The Civic Democrats, led by Mirek Topolanek, negotiated support from the Christian Democrats and the small Green Party but they were still a few votes shy of a majority. And so until this week the Social Democrats remained in power and there was no way out.

  • [Jonas Kaufmann]'s rising star is most apparent here in his native German repertoire, where the dark, baritonal shades of his voice and its frequently heroic manner best serve the roles of Max (Weber's Der Freischutz) and Walther (Wagner's Die Meistersinger)....

  • [Claudio Abbado]'s young hand-picked orchestra comes from Bologna and was formed in advance of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. The group's lineage is actually the famed Academy there, where Mozart himself was a pupil. From what's on display in these live performances, such a legacy is more than of just passing interest.

  • [Vaclav Havel] was a popular dissident in 1989 when virtually overnight a non-violent regime change took place in Communist Czechoslovakia -- the so-called "Velvet Revolution" -- and he was propelled from rebel artist to president. Czechoslovakia was the first country in the entire Soviet bloc where a genuine and lifelong non-communist, who moreover had only a few days before been a leading dissident, a 'star in the theater of opposition,' became the head of state. The castle of the title is Prague Castle, historical seat of the Czech nation -- "literally a city within a city, consisting of hundreds of buildings and many acres of gardens" -- inhabited in the past by Czech kings, princes and the Hapsburg rulers of the former Austro-Hungarian empire.

  • This editorial contains some serious inaccuracies that have been repeated in Winnipeg's media. This editorial states that the Youth Criminal Justice Act, because of its focus on rehabilitation, makes jail time for youth "rare or meagre even for the most heinous crimes." Actually, under the YCJA, Canada incarcerates more youths (and for longer sentences) than any other industrialized country, including the U.S. Not only that, but in most cases our incarceration rate for youth is higher than it is for adults who commit the same crimes -- so elevating most youths to adult court would actually shorten their sentences.
